Owner description: A genuine labyrinth in the heart of underground Paris, the Catacombs were fitted out in the galleries of former quarries. Twenty metres underground, the ossuary houses the remains of approximately six million Parisians, gradually transferred between the end of the 18th century and the mid 19th century, as the capital's cemeteries were closed for health reasons. Along a tangle of dark galleries, visitors discover a presentation of death with bones arranged in a romantic macabre decor. This unique site is a moving testimony to the history of Parisians and invites visitors on a timeless journey.

“Really cool, once we found it”
Reviewed 9 October 2011

I would definitely suggest checking this out while you're in Paris. It's something you just have to see, no description would do it justice. But be aware, the entrance is REALLY hard to find if you don't know exactly what you're looking for. There is a subway stop right across the street from the entrance, but if you take a different line to that area you may not be able to find it. There are no signs at all, it's pretty much unmarked, and all of the parks in the area have the same name. Perhaps others didn't have this experience, but I'm usually really good with directions, and it took us over an hour to find.

“Worth the wait”
Reviewed 8 October 2011

We lined up for two hours to gain entry to the Catacombs, but I'm glad we waited.

It was amazing to see the way the bones and skulls have been arranged. It was quite an eerie experience, but one that shouldnt be missed

If you are looking for something different or unusual from the other Paris attractions this is it. I suggest getting the audio guides for the history of the Catacombs, there is little information to read and the lighting is somewhat dim. Reading many reviews on the Catacombs we expected quite a line but on a late Wednesday afternoon we walked right in. Perhaps a bit more creepier with very few people down there. Sneakers or walking shoes are a must - lots of stairs and paths are wet with gravel. It was worth the visit!

“Get there early and nice to get out of central Paris”
Reviewed 6 October 2011

Definitely worth it. Very creepy and surreal that you are passing under the streets of Paris and what lurks below. It was nice to get out of central Paris and into the suburbs and it's an easy Metro ride out of the city.

Get there 15 minutes before it opens and you will walk straight in. The attraction accommodates 200? people and every time someone goes in, the counter goes up. It goes down when someone exits. So once 200 people are inside, someone has to go out before someone can go in. Just grab some croissants and a take away coffee and you'll be thanking yourself as the line reaches gigantic proportions by the time it opens.

The exit is just a door in a random street 1-2km away from where you started so definitely take your map.

Just a side note, if you are interested in Vietnamese food there is a Vietnamese community/street 2 metro stops away that serves up excellent Pho noodles. Place de'Italie or Tolbiac station. All the eateries and on Av. De Choisy near Tolbiac station.
