Owner description: A genuine labyrinth in the heart of underground Paris, the Catacombs were fitted out in the galleries of former quarries. Twenty metres underground, the ossuary houses the remains of approximately six million Parisians, gradually transferred between the end of the 18th century and the mid 19th century, as the capital's cemeteries were closed for health reasons. Along a tangle of dark galleries, visitors discover a presentation of death with bones arranged in a romantic macabre decor. This unique site is a moving testimony to the history of Parisians and invites visitors on a timeless journey.

Didn't like all the corkscrew stairs, but enjoyed the overall novelty of such a place. I was traveling with my teenage son, who was getting tired of museums and churches. This certainly caught his attention.

We were lucky enough to not have to queue when we went, as they only admit 200 at a time I believe. The tour is at your own pace so you can spend as much time as you want in the ossuary. You do have to walk for a while before you get to the actual ossuary and of course, after a while it can get a bit repetitive.

We lucked out with only a 25 minute wait mid-morning (off-season late Nov 2013), and really enjoyed this intriguing bit of Paris history. It is dark, dank, the dirt floor wet in places, with extremely long, narrow tunnels (especially at the beginning), so plan accordingly. Definitely get the audio (the narrative is divided into chapters, ours were not rewound, so press 1 then play to start at the beginning). Unique and mesmerizing, if it's your cup of tea. The gift shop across the street is run by the friendliest man in Paris.

We waited over an hour to get in, but it was pretty amazing to realize that over 6 million skeletons are buried in these old limestone caverns underneath Paris. Be prepared for a lot of steep stairs to get out.

It was an interesting tour, we queued for about half an hour, paid a reduced rate as between 14-26 which is good. On first impression believed it would include tour guide and be within a tour group but you literally can go at your own pace. There is a lot of steps and walking and it is very damp and musty so just be aware. It is very cool to see all the tunnels and it is easily followed as well as photography being allowed. It is very creepy but it is also really interesting and quite cool to see how it was completed and formed. There are also a few elements of surprise which were well worth it.
