Owner description: A genuine labyrinth in the heart of underground Paris, the Catacombs were fitted out in the galleries of former quarries. Twenty metres underground, the ossuary houses the remains of approximately six million Parisians, gradually transferred between the end of the 18th century and the mid 19th century, as the capital's cemeteries were closed for health reasons. Along a tangle of dark galleries, visitors discover a presentation of death with bones arranged in a romantic macabre decor. This unique site is a moving testimony to the history of Parisians and invites visitors on a timeless journey.

“Amazing to visit, get here early”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

My husband had heard about this place, and whilst I was a little skeptical about both seeing 6 million skeletons and getting up early, it was 100% worth both. So amazing, if a bit creepy, feels a world away from the rest of Paris. We got there on a Sunday morning at 9.10 and got in after 80 minutes. When we were going in at 10.20 (it opens at 10) the queue was all the way around the block and they only allow 200 down there at once.
So definitely try and get there around 9am. It's definitely worth a visit to see something so different.

“Scary but a must see”
Reviewed 5 May 2014 via mobile

If you are into something different and doesn't mind standing in the queue this is a top attraction, definitely worth seeing. Be aware that the ticket office closes at 4 pm and there is a long line to get in so I would recommend to go before 2 pm.

“Three-and-a-half hours I'll never get back”
Reviewed 4 May 2014 via mobile

Many people write reviews because they either love an attraction or hate it. I'm somewhere in the middle when it comes to The Catacombs of Paris. While I recognize its geological and historical significance, I felt the long, long wait (just over two-and-a-half hours when we arrived an hour before opening time) was too, too long. Luckily it was not raining. There was no place to sit down, no shelter and no rest rooms. Finally inside, we descended about 100 steps, walked through dark passages, and finally got the the part with the skeletons: thousands and thousands of skeletons, stacked up along the walls and down side passages. OK, we got the point. But unfortunately, we still had to walk another 20 minutes before finally reaching the exit. The shop just across the street from the exit generously offers use of its toilet, whether you buy a shinbone-shaped eraser or not. The only way this is a Paris highlight is if you bring your tweens or teens.

“Confronting & Somewhat Sad”
Reviewed 3 May 2014 via mobile

I do not deny that this is one of the most unique and interesting sights Paris has to offer, overall I give it 4 stars. However the thought of over 6 million people's remains having been relocated to what is now a tourist attraction is somewhat sad. Unmarked, unknown, and nameless, I would hate to think how these people would feel had they known this would become their final resting place. Tourist taking photos of their remains and many disregarding the "No Flash" and "Do Not Touch" ordinances throughout the catacombs. Just something to think about when planning your visit.

“The fascinating "down side" of Paris!”
Reviewed 2 May 2014 via mobile

Note the fine print on the website! The site closes at 5, but, because of the time it takes to go through, the last admission is actually at 4. We were the last in, for which we were grateful, having waited uncertainly for over an hour, but we did have to rush through. Earlier entry will give you more time to read the interpretive signs and appreciate the features, not limited to the ossuary. We didn't find it to be "macabre" at all; just fascinating. Our 9-year old thought it was a bit creepy, but even she was impressed with the sheer scale of it. And of course the idea of hidden, secret passageways appeals to the kid in all of us. Highly recommended and worth the wait.
