Owner description: A genuine labyrinth in the heart of underground Paris, the Catacombs were fitted out in the galleries of former quarries. Twenty metres underground, the ossuary houses the remains of approximately six million Parisians, gradually transferred between the end of the 18th century and the mid 19th century, as the capital's cemeteries were closed for health reasons. Along a tangle of dark galleries, visitors discover a presentation of death with bones arranged in a romantic macabre decor. This unique site is a moving testimony to the history of Parisians and invites visitors on a timeless journey.

“Long lines but worth a look”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

We started queuing at about 9.15 and it opens at 10am. I think we got in at 11.30am in the end so it was a long wait. They only allow a maximum of 200 in at any one time so it operates on a 1 out 1 in basis. Unfortunately although you cant prebook it does appear that the staff were letting in groups of people with tour guides who went straight to the front so I don't know if that was supposed to happen but it looked like the tour guides knew the staff. This meant the rest of us had to wait a lot longer which was annoying. Very interesting once in there and some people had taken torches with them which was a good idea. Because they are so long and they only allowed 200 people in you did not feel cramped or anything and it was lovely and cool. Lots of steps down and up.

“Don't Miss it With Teenagers”
Reviewed 17 June 2014 via mobile

If you have teenagers, the catacombs should be part of any tourists' visit to Paris. Somehow this attraction is not on the usual "A" list. What it lacks in historical relevance and deep culture, it makes up for in a great use of a few hours. In fact, my kids all put it at the top of their lists, thinking it was something very unique and spooky. And for teenagers who watched the Disney Hunchback movie when they were younger, it's was a good tie in to use the story that Quasimodo lead the bad guys to the gypsies hiding in the catacombs. We did the catacombs on the same day as Notre Dame so it worked out perfectly.

“Don't miss it!!!”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

I had heard that the lines to get in were long. I arrived a little before the doors opened and the line was around the block. I waited for almost 2 hours to get in but it was worth it!

Just walking through the catacombs is interesting enough but if you want interesting information about the history of Paris then get the audio tour.

Worth the wait and something different to do in a fantastic city!

“A bit numbing”
Reviewed 17 June 2014 via mobile

The nearly 3 hour wait in line went fairly quickly as we were fortunate enough to have an interesting French neighbor who filled us in on all things France. The catacombs themselves were interesting in the beginning but the sheer volume of Bones eventually just numbed us. Also there was very helpful staff across the road in the souvenir shop from the exit. They pointed us in the right direction to pretty good restaurants.

“get there early!”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

If you're going in the summer months (or any time really) get there early as the queue is enormous. It opens at 9.30am, we got there at 9am and still waited nearly 2 hours. The actual walk through takes only 40 minutes (you don't need a tour).
