Owner description: A genuine labyrinth in the heart of underground Paris, the Catacombs were fitted out in the galleries of former quarries. Twenty metres underground, the ossuary houses the remains of approximately six million Parisians, gradually transferred between the end of the 18th century and the mid 19th century, as the capital's cemeteries were closed for health reasons. Along a tangle of dark galleries, visitors discover a presentation of death with bones arranged in a romantic macabre decor. This unique site is a moving testimony to the history of Parisians and invites visitors on a timeless journey.

Very interesting historical event led to this. Long lines, we waited 2 hours but it was worth it.
There are about 200 steps down and 100 back up on narrow circular stairs. Not for the mobility challenged.

This is not an attraction that should be skipped. This is a great attraction that is a little different than the rest of what Paris has to offer.. You should arrive early as the line tends to be very long and slow moving in the afternoon. You should also purchase the 3 Euro audio guide as the history is quite fascinating and the Catacombs are entirely in French so it offers some translation of the signs on the walls.

Had a break in business so my co-worker and I decided to hit up the Catacombs. We've been to Paris before and wanted to do something other then the Tower, etc. which we've already seen. This sounded interesting. We arrived at 11am to what appeared to be about an hour wait (based on a line that wasn't really "that" long..I mean seriously...have you been to Disney?). Instead it was 3 hours of standing in line with nowhere to sit unless you sit on the ground or uncomfortably on the fence. FYI...If the line is wrapped around the park and you're standing in line where you can see the front portion of the line through the path in the park...you'll be waiting at least 3 hours. About every 10-15 minutes it moves about 6 feet at best...torture. I don't attribute this wait at all to the limited number of people allowed inside at one time. This is totally a case of one single ticket booth with one person (not in a rush) selling tickets. Really thought the whole concept and the walls of bones was cool since I've never done one of these before...but seriously not worth a 3 hour wait. An hour, sure. Should definitely have done more research before going so it was entirely my fault!

We started queuing at about 9.15 and it opens at 10am. I think we got in at 11.30am in the end so it was a long wait. They only allow a maximum of 200 in at any one time so it operates on a 1 out 1 in basis. Unfortunately although you cant prebook it does appear that the staff were letting in groups of people with tour guides who went straight to the front so I don't know if that was supposed to happen but it looked like the tour guides knew the staff. This meant the rest of us had to wait a lot longer which was annoying. Very interesting once in there and some people had taken torches with them which was a good idea. Because they are so long and they only allowed 200 people in you did not feel cramped or anything and it was lovely and cool. Lots of steps down and up.

If you have teenagers, the catacombs should be part of any tourists' visit to Paris. Somehow this attraction is not on the usual "A" list. What it lacks in historical relevance and deep culture, it makes up for in a great use of a few hours. In fact, my kids all put it at the top of their lists, thinking it was something very unique and spooky. And for teenagers who watched the Disney Hunchback movie when they were younger, it's was a good tie in to use the story that Quasimodo lead the bad guys to the gypsies hiding in the catacombs. We did the catacombs on the same day as Notre Dame so it worked out perfectly.
