Owner description: A genuine labyrinth in the heart of underground Paris, the Catacombs were fitted out in the galleries of former quarries. Twenty metres underground, the ossuary houses the remains of approximately six million Parisians, gradually transferred between the end of the 18th century and the mid 19th century, as the capital's cemeteries were closed for health reasons. Along a tangle of dark galleries, visitors discover a presentation of death with bones arranged in a romantic macabre decor. This unique site is a moving testimony to the history of Parisians and invites visitors on a timeless journey.

How can this have the longest waiting times in Paris??? I cannot understand it. I really didn't think many people would be interested in this, how wrong I could be. I think people see the queue and just join in to see what's going on rather than actually want to go and see the catacombs in the first place.
Basically if you want to go, get there at about 0830hrs in the morning. You will still queue for about 2-3 hours but it is better than getting there any later. There is cafe across the street to your left as you queue so one of your party can go and get some hot drinks and pastries if needs be.
It is a bit damp and slippy with low ceilings at points. I don't believe there are any toilets there either.
You need to seriously consider whether this is a necessary part of your trip to Paris. You might think it is now, but I was literally angry and stressed by the time I got in there!

After reading reviews here, we arrived at 8:30 am for the 10 am opening and there were already 20 people waiting in line. We got in around 10:20 am and the walk did take about 45 minutes. No flash photography allowed and it does get muddy in places. Be aware: close to opening time people not in the line start crowding around the entrance. There is a woman (not employed by the catacombs) who appears at opening time and starts selling tickets from a stack she has for a guided tour in french. If you got there before opening time but too late for a good place in line, wait to see the woman at the entrance and then buy one of her tickets. I have no idea how much they are but you can get right in and then get an English audio guide and stay with the tour or not.

There can be quite a long wait but it is definitely worth it!

Just make sure you bring enclosed shoes and a jacket because it is consistently 14 degrees celsius down there regardless of the time of year.

We got there at 0830 for a 1000 opening, but worth it. Under 18s free. Lots of steps and a two km walk underground. A little macabre but not scarey.

We were waiting for three hours before we finally got in and even arrived about 15 minutes before opening. At the start it was fascinating, but at some point it gets old. Would recommend the audiotour, because that made the experience better. They also could do something with reservation times etc, because the system they have now is terrible.
