This is a little known activity to visitors but the norm for the local 20 Somethings. Sit, eat, drink and chat with friends on the banks of the river Seine.
Best described as a very long group of young people all chatting, drinking and laughing the evening away. Away from expensive bars and restaurants. Away from tourists and away from the hubbub of traffic and rush hour mayhem, happening a few metres above you.
The river has, on both banks, a lower level walkway, frequented by people walking, running, riding and now scootering.
Yesterday evening we sat with friends with feet dangling over the stone river-bank edge, plastic glass of champagne and making sandwiches, basking in the warm evening sun.
River cruisers passed by every 10 minutes, paying passengers waving at us. We of course raised our glasses and waved back.
There was a real buzz on the river bank. This was the Paris youth, students, young professionals and lovers sharing the sun, wine and conversation in the open air. No waiters. No bill and definitely no fear of the river a few metres below.
We accessed the river bank by steps close to the Louvre from the pavement where artists sell their pictures from small green boxes.
If you want to picnic or just drink and talk whilst watching the sun set, do what the locals do. Do it on the banks of the Seine.
