The jewelry vendor was overpriced. I can find similar items in small boutiques for less than these prices. She refused to bargain and was rude as well - wouldn't speak to me in either French or English. The tablecloths seemed to be a good bargain at the other end of the market...but were synthetic fabrics. Can't speak to the food for sale. I felt the jewelry vendor's high prices were because the market was filled with tourists. She does have a huge selection...but don't expect bargains.

This was the first street market we went to in Paris on a Saturday. It is located literally on top of the Maubert Mutualite station. We walked right out of the station and we right there. It is also walking distance from Ile St. Louis where we stayed. The market started closing up between 1 and 2. It was also raining, so I'm not sure if this had any impact on the closing time or amount of products. This is a fairly small market (compared to the market by Bastille), but I’m glad we went. We bought some mustards (from 1-3euro) to take home and scarves for gifts (5euro). We also bought some fresh fruit for our stay. The market is mostly fresh food, but they have a few booths with scarves/ jewelry. There were also a few booths with stuff that you would be able to take back as gifts like mustard, fois gra, etc. Right in front of the market (you can’t miss it) is a great cheese shop- Laurent Dubois. We also loved the other stores in this area- wine shop and bakery. We came back to get picnic supplies and wine at these stores. After the market, we walked to Gerard Mulot to get macaroons. It wasn't far and so worth it! So much to do in this area!

I have been going to the Mauber Mutualite market and its surrounding stores for more than twenty years. Whether in Paris on business or pleasure, I love to go back for a snack or a cafe creme.

What makes MMM fun is that it is definately not a tourists market for the most part, but part of the neighborhood. The cheese shop on the south side of the market is amazing and has been forever. Great fruit and veg, breads. A cafe on the corner. A metro stop and only a ten minute walk from Notre Dame.

From MMM you may go back west on the Blvd St. Germain toward the Sorbonne or you can wonder up hill to the Pantheon and also stop by St-Etienne du Mont church....where Owen Wilson meets the limo in Midnight in Paris. Aside from the movie tie, it is a great neighborhood for strolling. May and June are great from strawberries in the market...they go down well with a little blanc de blanc in the park.

While you enjoy the market, see if you can find out a bit about its darker history. A challenge for the visit.

We walked through this market on Tuesday morning and were impressed with how many stalls there were. A lot of great looking produce, seafood, and meats. I only wish I'd had a kitchen to use all of it in!
