“Charming and very well Located!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 November 2008

It was a Sisters and Daughters trip, except one daughter couldn't make it and we had an excellent substitute. We had checked out the Hotel on our previous trip to Paris and absolutely loved the location and the fact that it was "off the street".

Yes, the rooms are not spacious, but they are clean, and well appointed. Our room was on the 5th or 6th floor and we tried to used the spiral staircase as much as possible to work off all those baguettes, etc. But we had a fabulous view over the rooftops over Paris, and the Courtyard. The bathrooms are small, and yes, everything gets wet when you take a shower so work with it. Internet access in the lobby for a small fee. We did not take breakfast at the hotel because there are too many great spots nearby to do so......also a grocery store (with wine) a short walk away. Missed a little fridge, though as we like to do stinky cheese with our wine!

Plan to stay there in the future for sure--it is a great spot and walking distance to absolutely everything we love in Paris.

We stayed at the Hotel des Marronniers from July 6-8, 2008. The hotel is just 2 blocks from St. Germain des Pres cathedral, and is located on a quiet street but actually in a very vibrant area of Paris. I reviewed literally tons of hotels online trying to discern what would be good and what not, and we were a bit concerned choosing a hotel that was not a major corporate place, but we absolutely loved it. We went with our 2 children (4 of us total).

We stayed on the fifth floor in a quad room, which was actually similar to having 2 rooms with a bathroom in between. The room was lovely, with a window opening onto a courtyard. From the fifth floor we were able to see over the rooftops of Paris, and it was very bright and sunny. As is to be expected in any of the hotels in the older part of Paris, the bathroom was very nice but small, but it was more than adequate for our use.

The hotel is somewhat of a surprise in that it is located about a hundred feet off of the street towards the middle of the block, giving it a quiet location with a wonderful garden in back, but when you leave the hotel and walk down the street you are in a very vibrant area, with outdoor cafes, artisanal gelato stores, art stores, history such as St. Germain church, etc. It is also just 2 blocks to the metro, and we used that about half the time to get around Paris.

The service was wonderful -- very friendly and they helped us to book a restaurant as well as to figure out places to go.

Just so you know, Notre Dame is no more than a 10 minute walk from this hotel; jump on the metro and Monte Martre and the Sacre Couer are only 6 stops away; the Louvre and the Tuileries are 10 minutes; etc. You can't beat the location.

And in the morning there are plenty of places to have breakfast with crepes, etc.

  • Liked — Friendly service, great location.
  • Disliked — Not palatially large rooms with high ceilings, but its in an old part of Paris so you expect that.

Just got back from 6 days at this hotel. It was wonderful. The location is perfect, the rooms are clean, and the front desk people speak English and are very polite and helpful. Maid service is prompt and thorough.

Also, what is great about this hotel is that it sets back in a courtyard. This is unlike most hotels in Paris which are directly on the street and thus subject to lots of street noise. This hotel, on the contrary, is VERY quiet and there is a nice garden area in the back for relaxing.

Please note that note that as in ALL of Paris, the hotel rooms are small. That is reality. It is good if you can get a room with high celiings as this makes the room feel a lot bigger. We looked at 2 rooms and chose room #11 and loved it.

All the cafes in the area are great EXCEPT for Le Bonepart. DO NOT GO THERE AS YOU WILL BE OVERCHARGED IF YOU ARE A TOURIST. (I CALL IT "LE CAFE RIPOFF").

The hotel is within walking distance to everywhere-- and the hotel will gladly call you a taxi if you feel you need one. Try a boat ride on the Seine to watch the Eiffel Tower light up at 10:30pm. There is a grocery store about a 5 minute walk from the hotel. There are no refrigerators in the rooms but you can still get some snacks and things at the market for your room.

I would not suggest this hotel for families with children as the rooms are small and there are only 4 TV channels (2 german, 1 sports, CNN). Kids might fare better at a hotel that could offer them more amenities and more space.

We will stay at this hotel again, without a doubt! It is wonderful.

  • Liked — Quiet location, friendly staff
  • Disliked — no fridge in room; only 4 TV channels

I have stayed at the Hotel des Marronniers several times over the past few years, both for business and for pleasure. Although the rooms are tiny (and the bathooms about the size of my New York city closet!), I love the place and would happily return on my next trip to Paris.

The entrance is in a courtyard off the Rue Jacob--very charming, and makes the hotel a little quieter than if it were right on the street.

The location can not be beat. If you take the RER in from the airport, it is a pretty easy walk from the St. Michel station to the hotel (extremely easy if you have a rolling suitcase). There are countless restaurants nearby, as well as wonderful shopping. The Musee d'Orsay, the Louvre, the Musee Cluny, Notre Dame, and many other attractions are within easy walking distance.

The rooms are quite small--and to be honest, my experience has been that it is easier to stay in this hotel alone than with a traveling partner (though if you are flexible, it's possible not to go nuts with a traveling partner, too). But it's Paris, how much time do you want to spend in your room anyway?? The rooms generally have a bed and a desk with a chair--that's it. So if you want to spend any time lounging in your room, it's either going to be lying in the bed or sitting in a desk chair.

If you need a spacious bathroom, don't stay here. The rooms I have stayed in have tiny bathrooms (maybe 4' x 4') with a shower that is not enclosed from the rest of the bathroom, so everything gets wet when you take a shower.

I have never eaten breakfast at the hotel--there are just too many options for a good brasserie breakfast nearby--but there is a nice little dining room and a lovely courtyard.

There is internet access in the lobby for free.

Overall, if you are looking for an American-style hotel you should not stay here. But if you really just want a clean and comfortable bed to sleep in in a fantastic neighborhood, the Hotel des Marronniers is a great choice.

I'm giving this hotel 4 stars not because it is fancy or spacious or has many great amenities, but more because the location gives it an edge over more luxurious hotels in less convenient locations. For the price, I think it is a great spot, and for me (and my budget), I'd rather spend less money to be in a clean, comfortable spot and save my pennies to eat great food and drink great wine in all the many places nearby.

Charming part of Paris and well located but the lift wasn't working ( out for over a week) and after complaints, only reluctantly offered to offset the extreme inconvenience of having a room on 6th Floor at 171 euros a night! The hair dryer didn't work, carpets weren't clean and the bed spreads were stained. Not recommended.

We stayed here mid-week in early February 2008 and really enjoyed it. The hotel is in the heart of the St Germain area, surrounded by boutiques, art galleries and cafes, and within easy walking distance of the metro, the Louvre and Notre Dame.

Our room was small but clean and delighfully furnished with upholstered walls. The hotel is set back from the street so isn't affected by traffic noise, but the plumbing is very noisy!

The staff were friendly and helpful.

This is a great hotel located in the heart of St. Germain des Pres. Yes, the rooms are small but they are delightfully decorated with colorful fabrics and elegant window treatments. The hotel, itself, is situated a good distance from the street and although the location is in a very bustling area, the hotel is quiet. I slept very soundly. Lawrence, Sylvan and Charlotte are all so friendly and accommodating... your stay will be even more pleasant because of them. I will definitely return.
