“Good value, great location!”
Reviewed 21 October 2013

Stayed at the Hotel Beaugency just off Rue Cler our five nights in Paris earlier this month. Staff was helpful and very accommodating of our limited French language skills. Bedroom was large by Paris standards, clean, and functional. Bathroom was spacious, worked well for the two of us, and had a GREAT shower. The location was superb -- half block off Rue Cler, five minute walk to a large grocery store and the Ecole Militaire metro stop, and a 15-minute stroll to the Eiffel Tower. Also highly recommend Le Florimond restaurant just down the street.

DebraAnn55 gives an extensive and pretty accurate description of the hotel. We were at the end of a month in Europe staying in small hotels and found this hotel to be in the middle of the pack. It was clean and functional with a few quirks that were of no major consequence. We found all the staff friendly and quite helpful. Don't eat the breakfast - Rue Cler is just outside your door with great bakeries and cafés. You really have to walk to Rue St Dominique to get a view of the Eiffel Tower, but what a great view.
There are metro stations close to the hotel and for those on the road for awhile two laundromats close by.
We would stay there again.

We had never been to Paris before, so our booking was an educated guess. It turned out to be a great deal. The room for my wife and I was a reasonable size; a little small by American standards, but spacious enough to spread out after a long day of touring the city. It was air conditioned and was crisp, clean, and comfortable. The bathroom was also clean and modern. The location is one block from Rue Cler, and about a fifteen minute walk to the Eiffel Tower. Since it's on a side street, traffic noise isn't a problem. Apparently, because of its proximity to Rue Cler, it's sometimes hard to get a reservation during the peak vacation season. The price was quite reasonable and overall, I'd recommend it highly for people who want a comfortable base for day trips without spending a lot on a ritzy motel with all of the amenities... there is no pool and no restaurant, but the Rue Cler cafes are just outside the front door.

When I first got here, my first impulse was to give this just a one. We had just come from London and that room, though small, was cheaper, cleaner, better furnished, and had a nicer staff (and a better breakfast, too, that was free).

I booked this hotel based on a couple of things: pictures that showed you could see the Eiffel Tower from your room and Ric Steves' recommendation. Well, the only thing you could see from our tiny room was a courtyard and other people's windows. The decorating was drab (brown bedspreads) and very cheap looking. It looked institutional. It could have been cleaner. The bathroom was a decent size and included a bathtub instead of just a shower.

The elevator says it hold 3 people, but that's 3 people who intimately know each other. It's really only for 2. With luggage, it's only for 1. Be wary when you step out of the elevator because it may be dark. The light is on a motion sensor, but it can be a little scary (and maybe even a little dangerous) if you are not aware that you have to take a couple of steps before it goes on. It was noted that the stairs were not very clean.

The breakfast was 9 euros and frankly, not that great, though it was adequate. It was especially disappointing since we had just come from London where we had a free breakfast with much fresher food, including fresh cut up fruit and cheese. Although the items were similar, they were not fresh (except for the bread and pastry). The muffins were packaged. There was canned fruit cocktail (even though just 2 blocks away was a great fruit stand). The cheese, too, was packaged rather than fresh (isn't France supposed to be known for cheese? What's with the processed stuff?). The good thing is that the hotel is very near the Rue Cler where you can get a better breakfast for either cheaper or the same price. Additionally, there is a grocery store not that far away, so you could buy something and store it in the small refrigerator in the room. And, as previously mentioned, there is a great fruit stand close by.

The staff?: It depends on who was there. The person during the day was nice enough. The nicest staff member was a student who was working there at night. There was a problem one night and the staff member (not the student) just kind of shrugged his shoulders and said it would be addressed he next day. No explanation was given. Maybe it was impossible to address that night, and I would have been totally ok with that if that had been the situation, but it was impossible to know. Also, the day we arrived there, we found that we had only been given one bath towel. When I went downstairs to ask for an additional towel, I was made to feel like I was lying about only having one bath towel in the room. They do speak English well and are able to give suggestions as to where to go, where to eat, etc. They were helpful in suggesting a way to get to the airport and making the arrangements for us.

So why did I change and give this a 3? We stayed long enough (6 nights) that I got used to the downsides of this hotel. Also, I've never been to France before and had nothing to compare it to--I felt it was unfair to compare to American hotels. There was free wifi that worked well. The rooms were quiet. There was air conditioning that was very quiet. The location was very good. It was close to the subway, so it was easy getting around. It was near the Rue Cler with a lot of little cafes and shops . In the larger neighborhood, there were many restaurants, shops, a grocery store, banks, pharmacy, etc. In other words, if you needed anything, it was close by. It was a short walk to the Champs de Mars and the Eiffel Tower, and within walking distance to the cruise boats, the Invalides, and the Rodin Museum. So, as long as you know what to expect and you're not planning on spending all of your time in the room, this would be an ok place to stay.

Room Tip: If you want a view of the Eiffel Tower, be sure to ask.

Only stayed one night but it was great experience. Bed comfortable, towels thick and plenty of hot water. Tub with shower but no shower curtain so floor gets wet. Room very, very small but smartly furnished and does have small refrig. Lift also very small. A little pricey, but the location is great, in walking distance of some sights and hop on and off bus stop. Room on 3rd floor facing street but quiet and a great view of the Eiffel Tower from bathroom window. Very helpful English-speaking staff.

Even the great Rick Steves can be wrong at times, and this was one of them. As ardent followers of Rick's, we selected the Beaugency based on his recommendation when looking for a centrally-located hotel for our 3-day stay in early September.

The minute we walked into the dilapidated lobby/reception area (which looked like it had not been updated since the 1980's) and were "greeted" by a grumpy receptionist, we were already getting bad vibes. These were only confirmed when we got into the room, only to be confronted with hair on the bed sheet and pubic hair and remnants of stool in the toilet.

We were so disgusted we were ready to walk out right then and there. Unfortunately, this was peak season in Paris and it was impossible to find other availabilities at the last minute. Since this was Paris and no one really spends that much time indoors, we decided to stick it out for the 3 days.

The final insult that was added to the injury was when we tried to arrange transportation to CDG airport thru the hotel. The grumpy receptionist told we were out of luck with the shuttle (which costs 20 euros per person) since it had been completely booked. She then proposed to reserve a taxi for us and assured us it would not cost more than 50-55 euros. Having no choice, we accepted and the taxi was booked. Later in the same day, we spoke to the night shift clerk (who was the only friendly and helpful staff member we met during our stay) and he told us there were plenty other shuttle options that the receptionist could have looked into for us. He then called her to ask her cancel the taxi reservation but was overuled. The nice clerk then reassured us once again that the taxi fare would be at most 50-55 euros.

Guess what? The meter was already at almost 14 euros when we stepped into the cab, and the final fare was 75 euros for a ride that was supposed to be no more than 55 euros. When we brought this up with the driver, he gave us some story about a 50% surcharge that applies before 10:00am. Either he was ripping us off, or the hotel had badly misinformed us.

In the end, the only redeeming feature we could think of for the Beaugency was its superb location (a few steps to Rue Cler and 10 minutes to la Tour Eiffel). However, this was not nearly enough to make up for the filthy accommodations and terrible service.

I chose this hotel 'cause of location. At the area it has the best prices and rates.
The room is preeetty small (just like every review said so) but it has all the necesary, its super clean and confortable. We had a room with a little balcony, windows really soundproof. The neighborhood is awesome it has a lot of different options around it. Really close to the metro station.
The front desk guy for the first night ( I unfourtanetly forgot his name) was super friendly, kind , really interested in recommend you places to visit or eat or help you in general. Cant't said the same for the old men at the front desk the night of september 13th. He was Really rude, not nice, bitter, was never at the front desk, didn't help us at all and early in the morning (5 am 'cause I had an early fly) went downstairs to check out and pay and he was sleeping and snoring really loud. I had to wake him out and he got mad!!!...
Except for the bitterman at the front desk I will recommend you this hotel!!
