“Nice rooms but not as good as expected”
Reviewed 12 July 2012

This hotel was not as good as expected. I guess it is supposed to be one of Accor's flagship hotels but it did not live up to its hype. It is a perfectly functional hotel but lacks the ambiance and character that should be present in a property of this pedigree. The staff are indifferent and not particularly helpful and one could even say slightly arrogant. Our room had a damaged panel near the door and stains on the corridor carpet and walls. The shower has very low water pressure. Rooms were nice but traffic noise was a nuisance.

Great hotel - very nice location, just down the block from the opera house. We were able to walk almost everywhere from this hotel including the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Orsay, The staff was very hospitable and accommodating. The concierge was the "service" we used the most and they were extremely helpful. The rooms were very nice, clean, and well kept. I would say it seemed a bit on the pricier side than other hotels but you do get what you pay for. The restaurants had good food - breakfast was great. We didn't use any of the other services - we hardly spent any time in the hotel.

I have just finished a month long trip to Europe and can say without reservation that the three days we spent in Paris at the Hotel Scribe were the highlight. From the moment we arrived everything was perfect, the scent in the foyer, the rooms available early and all special requests accomodated, the extraordinarily friendly staff ( especially the indefatiguable Sebastien!) and the exquisite details to be enjoyed. The location was wonderful and we were fortunate with the weather! I just want to thank the staff for making our Paris visit truly memorable.

Room Tip: We were happy with are courtyard facing room as it was very quiet

This hotel had the smallest rooms of all the hotels we stayed in during our France trip, but the beds were extremely comfortable and the staff were by far the most friendly and accommodating of any staff we encountered. Very clean, elegant, and good location near the Metro and walking distance to the Louvre. Would definitely stay there again!

Excellent luxury hotel. The staff are professional and very friendly. The room i stayed in was a good size and very clean. The hotel is ideally located near the metro station. There are a few restaurants near the hotel including The American Dream Restaurant across the road that has an extraordinary large menu but not the best of food!

Overall an excellent hotel. Recommended.

Although this hotel is rated as 5 star it would be unfair to compare it to other 5 star offerings in the area when you consider the huge price differences. We booked a 2 bedroom suite to accommodate our family (1 set of grandparents, 1 set of parents and 2 young toddlers) for five nights. The suite (we were allocated The Marcel Proust Suite on 3 rd floor) comprised of a tastefully furnished, huge circular living/dining room connected to a very good sized bedroom (I believe these were luxury club rooms) on either side. We opted for a fully prepaid rate and considering the size of the suite and the fact that internet and mini bar (soft drinks) were included I believe that this represented extremely good value for money. At some of the other Paris hotels I considered (George V, Shangri La) we would have been able to reserve one room for around the same money.

So why was this hotel so reasonable (by Parisienne standards - standalone the prices seemed quite steep to me until I looked at a few other hotels in the area)? I think this hotel is probably closer to a very fine 4 star property. The bathrooms at the Scribe were not luxurious (small, combined bath/shower that was hard to access) and some of the furnishings were a little worn. Service was mixed (some aspects excellent, other seriously lacking) and other than the lovely sweets in the room on the first two nights and the champagne in our room the day we arrived, there were none of the "over and above" highlights that you would expect in truly 5 star hotels. However, everything was absolutely adequate and the hotel had character and charm and it did feel like we were in Paris.

Service wise the experience was mixed. Reservations staff were incredibly helpful as were all the reception staff we encountered. We found the concierge to be quite unhelpful and almost rude (two different people on different days as well) and housekeeping was mixed also.

The location of the hotel is spectacular. I highly recommend the Opera area for anyone who wants to be central without beng in a total tourist trap. You are close to The Lourvre, Jardins Tulluries, luxury shopping strips and amazing department stores. You are also close enough to wander to Marais and stroll along the river.

As space and location are very important to us, we will definitely returm to The Scribe next time we visit Paris.

Room Tip: If you want space the prestige/ opera suites are the way to go!

I stayed at this central Paris hotel for 3 nights in May. As I've come to expect from all the Sofitels I've stayed in, the Scribe is a very well managed hotel - the staff are welcoming, helpful and professional, the hotel is luxurious and spacious, the restaurant serves wonderful food.

I didn't have the opportunity to explore the local area, other than heading to the Nearby Harry's Bar, but found the location suitable for getting myself around Paris for meetings.

The only downside is the terrible irons in the rooms! A huge plus is the free WIFI.
