First of all, the photographer who took that fancy looking shot of the lobby should win an award. That somehow makes it look like a great place. In reality it's a bit of a dump. However, you get what you pay for... and the prices here are lower than elsewhere.

The original rooms they booked for us were in the secondary building, on the 5th floor. The only elevator is only slightly larger than one restaurants use for food orders. It could only fit one (small) person.

On the positive side, after complaining about this, they moved us into the main building, which has a slightly better elevator (well, much better when compared to the food elevator, still bad when compared to normal elevators). One of the rooms had a nice view and a balcony we could go out on. The other had a terrible view, and no balcony.

Fixtures were loose and/or falling off the wall/ceiling. The air-conditioning was very loud and also ineffective... a terrible (useless) combination.

In the end I was happy staying here because it was a good spot to take bus tours from (the hop-on bus has a stop right around the corner,) and also because there were some nice restaurants near by. The hotel wasn't great, but it was good enough for our needs for one weekend.

Room Tip: Fifth floor of main building had a nice balcony.

For the price I paid (EUR 452 for 3 nights in a triple room), I was disappointed with the room condition and amenities. This may still be acceptable if the front desk staff is friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the male staff on duty in the evening of 17 Oct 2013 (did not catch his name) was very unhelpful and unpleasant. I do not know if enquiring about nearby self-service laundry or asking if I can borrow extra clothes hanger are too much, but he certainly thought it is a fussy and ridiculous demand. To be fair, the front desk staff I encountered in the morning and the night before were friendly and acceptably helpful. I hope the hotel management pay more attention on customer service and considers renovating the hotel. Our room window was faulty and would not close/ be locked. But we did not ask for repair/ room change to avoid any more unpleasant encounter with the said staff. There was no facial tissue, no glass for water, no fridge/minibar. No value for money. The only good thing is the location, if you need to be very near the Gare de L'Est train station.

The area is not nice. Good if you need to be near a station or prostitutes but not if you want to experience the center of Paris. Hotel is expensive for what it is. Small over heated room, with windows you cannot open and no aircon. Generally it was more a hostel type room than a hotel but at Hotel prices. Bathroom was not clean as it had someone else hair on the floor.

My colleague was staying in another IBIS 10 minutes away by Gare de Nord and was not a lot happier. IBIS is generally a good chain but not in Paris from this experience.
