My wife & I spent 3 nights at the Best Western Folkestone Opera from August 21st through 24th, 2008. This was our 3rd trip to Paris together, however our first stay at the Folkestone Opera. Overall, we were very pleased with the Hotel. The Hotel represents itself as a 3 star and we would agree (I would even go as far as placing it at the very top end of this designation.). We selected the Hotel primarily for its location and what appeared to be (from the website) fairly up to date décor and it did not disappoint.

Room: We paid 115 Euros per night for a standard room (#603). We were very fortunate upon arrival to receive one of the 4 rooms on the 6th floor that have a balcony (sure is a nice place to wind down after a full day of sightseeing). The room and bathroom were tiny by American standards but fairly average by Paris standards. Furnishings were in very good shape and up to date. I was impressed by the flat screen TV. All hotel guests have access to free wireless internet. Aside from the balcony, the room didn’t have much seating other than the bed and a small desk with chair. Another hotel guest pointed out that the rooms without balconies appear to be about 4-5 feet wider. We spent so little time in the room that size didn’t really matter to us. The bed was comfy and the electronic privacy shade on the window kept the room very dark and quiet at night.

Amenities: The hotel offers a breakfast in the basement for roughly 15 Euros per day. We never tried it. There are too many inexpensive breakfast options near the hotel (i.e. pastry shop in Madeleine metro station). Our room did not include an iron & board, but the front desk was happy to provide it to my wife upon request. We found all of the front desk clerks to be both friendly and helpful (all spoke at least some English). At night, the Hotel offers a small bar in the lobby where there are a couple of seating areas for guests to relax and a computer where guests can use the internet for free.

Transportation: The hotel is within a short walk of a bevy of metro and RER stops. Madeleine (exit Rue Tronchet, walk a block or so, and Rue Castellane will be on your left) is arguably the closest; however Auber (RER A), Havre Caumartin, & Haussmann Saint-Lazare (RER E) are also very close. Honestly, the Hotel is close enough to walk to a lot of the top tourist sites (i.e. Concorde, Tuileries Garden, Louvre, etc.) however we generally chose to use the metro wherever possible to save the wear & tear on our feet.

Airport: We used the RER to go to/from the CDG. RER B runs to Gare du Nord where you can transfer to RER E (direction: Haussmann Saint-Lazare). Follow the exit signs to Rue du Havre, go right out the exit, and keep walking until you see Rue Castellane on your right. (Note that Rue du Havre becomes Rue Tronchet at Boulevard Haussmann)

Neighborhood: The Hotel is arguably in the epicenter of Paris shopping. Les Galeries Lafayette and Printemps (major department stores) are within a 5 minute walk as are a plethora of specialty stores (including a GAP for those of you who just discovered that Paris is pretty cool year-round and you didn’t bother to pack any jeans). We always felt safe walking to/from the Hotel, even after dark and late at night.

Food: The immediate area around the Hotel is fairly residential and isn’t exploding with cafes and other food options. There is a brasserie just down the street however it seemed like it closed very early each evening (i.e. 20:00). Galeries Lafayette has a great food hall with about 5-6 eateries, various specialty restaurants (including some not so special…McDonalds!), a self-serve café, and a reasonably priced supermarket (great for cheap bottled water and Coke!) Finding food near the Hotel was seldom an issue for us as we sightsee from sun up to sun down and often ate wherever we were at during lunch/dinnertime.

Overall we were very pleased with this Hotel. The location is great, the room was nice, and we felt like we got good value for our money. If you need a comfortable, clean place to sleep and shower each day, this is perfect for you. If you spend a lot of time in the room and need your space, you might want to consider some other options. We would definitely return to the Folkestone Opera.

Faultless. We stayed for one night only and I could just have taken up residence! Our room (103) was massive - I've stayed in Paris hotel rooms smaller than the bed! Furniture was a mix of dark wood and painted reproduction right down to the mini bar, the ceiling - even the bathroom - had lovely dark beams and, if you're an adventurous type, one whole wall opposite the bed was mirror! Despite being on the street and opposite the lift, we didn't hear a sound. Breakfast was all you could want - the fresh baked cakes were mouth watering. The staff were pleasant and very helpful. The hotel is 2 minutes from the Madeleine and Fauchon, about the same from Galeries Lafayette and 5 minutes from the Opera House. A definate choice for next time we want a romantic break or a dirty weekend.

Conveniently located, close to Madeleine metro, and an easy walk from the Opera Garnier which means you can get the Roissybus to and from CDG airport which is much cheaper than a taxi.

The hotel is clean and reasonably modern. The room was small but not cramped (especially for Paris!), and the bathroom was good.

The receptionist when we checked in was very helpful and spoke good english, although the receptionist on the other shift and check out could have been more helpful.

Our rate didn't include breakfast however there are two boulangeries in the street, and Fauchon (google it) just around the corner near the Madeleine does awesome pastries and good (although a bit expensive) coffee.

We visited the hotel for 5 days in July/August 2007 and enjoyed the time a lot. First of all, the hotel took into account our special request and gave us a room with a balcony - excellent! I had sent an email to the BW-site and asked for it, also informing that we'll arrive late. The person in the front desk even knew our name when we arrived.

Room was spacius enough, toilet/shower did the work. Breakfast was all we could hope for, from serials and bread to 3-4 different fruitcakes every morning, fruit salad etc...

Friendly personnel over all! Although communication was quite difficult because French people don't speak English that much...

Location was nice. We walked a lot, but the nearest subway stations are quite near also.

It took a little bit of time to find the nearest supermarket (if you don't count the kiosks nearby). Btw. it's behind the department stores at Rue De Caumartin walking street.

If we'll visit Paris again, this we'll be our choice within this price range.

We stayed at the Folkestone Opera for 4 nights and it was perfect for our needs. We wanted a room with 2 single beds, an ensuite bathroom, air conditioning, and a central location, and the Folkestone delivered. Knowing that rooms tend to be small in Europe, we were pleasantly surprised with the size of the room and of the bathroom. It was also nice to have a tub/shower instead of just a shower and a hair dryer. The room was very clean and was on a side street, (about one block from a subway station) which was very quiet considering we were downtown.

Our room rate also included breakfast daily, which was not fantastic, but adequate. Although the variety was pretty good, our only complaints were that the coffee was the worst we'd had in France and the cakes were a bit dry.

Location-wise, we were within walking distance to various subway stations, the Roissy bus that takes you to the airport, Printemps, l'Opéra, and many restaurants. As amateur foodies, we couldn't have picked a better location being within walking distance of Fauchon, Maille, and numerous other gourmet food and wine shops.

Staff were very friendly at this hotel, with the ladies taking care of breakfast always saying hello, and the front desk staff helpful with any questions we had.

Overall a great stay and I rated this above average due to the rate (130EUR/night inc breakfast), the room, the cleanliness, the location, and the staff. A solid 3-3+ star property in a city with umpteen options for standard accommodation. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.
