Conceived as a revolutionary bridge using technology that leapfrogged English and American achievements,in that ,in one reach without any point of support in between. However,even revolutionary ideas develop cracks and settling , so a new bridge was built for the upcoming World Fair in 1855.
Using the piers of the former suspension bridge and adding a new central pier in masonry,its stack used as a pedestal for allegorical sculptures of "land victory & maritime victory",while the two other piers were decorated with military sculptures bearing imperial coat-of-arms and trophies carved in high relief.
Your choice of Metro is Champs-Elysee-Clemenceau , La-Tour-Maubourg or Alma-Marceau. Its a superb place to float under at night....and day,of-course.
