“Good New Years Stay at the Holiday Inn Republique”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 February 2007

Stayed in the Holiday Inn Republique with my wife for New Years and had a positive experience throughout. The room were large clean and has plenty of facilities. The Hotel itself is quite nice but there is very little to do in the Republique area of Paris. On the flip side it is right beside a Metro Station.

Stayed December 2006

Stayed at this location for six nights just prior to Christmas. Positives --- access to public transportation is excellent with metro stop just outside the hotel entrance plus a very active 24/7taxi stand. At least 20 restaurants that serve until 10:30 p.m. are within three minutes walking. Try "Pizza Pino" for good food, nice staff plus warm bubbly atmosphere. Negatives--- hotel is not in a charming or tourist oriented part of city so you will need to utilize metro or taxi to get to all major sites. Hotel is a bit dreary; fortunately we were upgraded to a large room facing the street so we had a lovely view of the Place. Very quiet room with little street noise in spite of round-the-clock traffic. Bottom line: if you get a good price you will probably be OK here, but if you are looking for romantic Paris try a different location.

I made a reservation for 8 nights in Feb/2007 to attend a conference, but the event was cancelled. Now, I tried to cancel the reservation TWO WEEKS before the check-in date, but was told they will charge the whole stay which was over $1200 on my visa!!!! Visa dispute is underway, but I was disgusted by their attitude. Every year, I've been visiting a week or so in Paris, but will never ever stay in Holiday Inn again.

This was our first trip to Paris and staying in this hotel was the best choice we could have made.

At first we thought this hotel was going to be out of the way because it is located in the 11th arr. on the map and we had planned to stay in the Latin Quarter (5th arr.) where we had been told that it was the only place people stayed during Christmas, but we soon discovered that we could walk right outside and hop on the metro, where every train stopped at the Republique location and that the Latin Quarter was located at least a 15 minute walk away. We didn’t walk back to our hotel after 11 PM we took the metro back.

To our surprise Christmas was bustling in Paris. We were told that it is the slowest season and if that is true, I can’t imagine what spring is like. Christmas crowds flooded the streets with families from everywhere in the world, eager to see all the amazing and beautiful sights.

The hotel itself had great service from the beginning of our stay to the end. We were greeted politely and the hotel staff was always courteous. The concierge even made a last minute reservation for us at one of the best restaurants in Paris for Christmas day. You can ask the concierge almost anything and they are very helpful. We had the front desk mail our postcards and bought the postage from the hotel. Their staff is multi-cultural and multi-lingual. It is great to be in an international environment where people from all around the world can be attended equally. They also have complimentary newspapers at the front desk and a gift shop that is priced similarly to most of the souvenir shops you find in the city.

It was convenient to walk right outside and hop on the metro to go anywhere in the city and if you would rather take a cab somewhere, they are always parked outside. You could also from the plethora of restaurants surrounding the Republique square. You can even go to the McDonald’s across the street to use their free internet as long as you buy a beverage or something. There are cellular phone stores, pharmacies, banks, bars, cafes, bakery shops, almost anything you need around the Republique square. The hotel bar was great and the bartenders were very lively. The gym was small, but very convenient and exactly what we needed.

Our room was very comfortable and spacious, plus we had a great view. The bathroom was very clean and a good size as well. The mini-bar has assorted liquors, sodas, chocolates and Pringles and although they charge you for just opening it, if you actually take something the price is not that bad. It cost 25 Euros to purchase a 24 hour internet and movie package, which is worth it if the internet is your life line and you like to watch movies. We don’t sleep very much so when we came back to the hotel at 1a.m. watching a movie or going to the bar was definitely a plus.

The only thing that needed some work was the restaurant because they seem to be understaffed and it took too long to have your order dealt with. They even forgot my fiancées dessert and then brought out the wrong thing. Despite the lateness the food was great and if you like cold prepared dishes the dinner buffet is worth it because you can have your appetizer, main entrée, cheese and dessert for 19 Euros. Breakfast buffet however is a little steep and for eating breakfast foods, it is not worth 22 Euros. Maybe if you go once just to try it, but there are so many other places you can go for breakfast that you wouldn’t bother with the hotel restaurant after trying other places.

Overall, the Holiday Inn Paris Republique Hotel was a perfect cozy place for a romantic couple always on the go and we will always stay here when we are in Paris.

Hubby and I were due to stay here on 5th Jan but I've had a nightmare time trying to get them to honour their best rate guarantee (will match best rate you find and refund 10%). My claim was completely legit and correctly compiled (as they eventually admitted!) but despite several emails, the eventual offer of a half price breakfast, several international phonecalls, them looking on the worng websites, them comparing different currency as to why they can't honour (my rate in pounds was less than their rate (dollars!) etc they still haven't honoured. They've supposedly spoken to the hotel head of reservations and then the hotel general manager but still no joy. Now less than 36 hours before my depature the 'problem' has been sent to the corporate section!! Obviously completely incompetant company and I would say fraudulant! I'll be staying away from Holiday Inn's in future.

Stayed at his hotel over Christmas 2006. There were four of us, and we were placed in a "superior room" with two beds and a tiny cot. There was basically no room to move around, but the closets were large and the bathroom was decent. Beware, superior does not imply nice- the room was disgusting. Even worse, when we returned to the room the first night, we learned the heat in our room was broken! Someone came to fix it, but 30 minutes later it was still freezing. We both called and walked down to speak to the duty manager, and the hotel staff could not have been less accommodating. It took so much arguing to be moved, despite two of the hotel's staff members commenting on how cold the room was when they were trying to fix the heat. By 1am, they agreed to move us. They told us someone would help us move- that was a lie. By 2.30am, we settled into this new room, which was even smaller than the first. We had no room keys, toiletries, or towels but had to go to bed. The next day, we woke up late, missing our planned trip to Versailles. We soon discovered there was a large pothole in the floor under the carpet, as two members of my family almost tripped twice. We were so frustrated with this room as well but were worn out from moving the night before. Anyhow, the room they moved us to was horrible- tiny, a pothole in the floor, damaged furniture, and windows that were painted white (so you couldn't see out of them ) and wouldn't open. We were finally placed in a decent room, one of the recently upgraded ones. It still had problems, such as a broken light and no ventilation, but it was much nicer than the other two rooms and had a great view of the outside plaza. However, the hotel overall is a dump. Most of the staff is useless and could care less about their "clients." Louisa, one of the managers, was a true standout as she was great and saved the vacation for us.

I would not recommend staying here, but if you do, the location is good for a hotel OUT OF THE CITY CENTER. There are a lot of bars/restaurants right outside the door. You are not really in walking distance to anything you'd want to see, but the metro station adjacent to the hotel has 5 lines and almost everything is within 10 stops, with one or no transfers. The Paris metro system is top notch- lots of stations and very frequent service.

I'm not sure what other Paris hotels are like, but I'd imagine you could do a lot better elsewhere.

Good location, seconds away from the metro and a warm welcome on arrival. As Paris hotels go, the room size and comfort was excellent.

Only downside was breakfast, 22 Euros for turgid, dry, cold fare.

Overall a nice hotel and significantly better than most we have stayed in when visiting Paris..
