“The good and the bad and the ugly”
Reviewed 7 August 2013

The good: the location is terrific, opposite the Louvres in St. Germain. For the location, the room rates are reasonable.
The bad: this hotel needs some major renovation, though no doubt that would put the rate out of reach of most travellers. I have stayed here on and off for the last 10 years because I love the neighbourhood and seriously, the place needs a thorough cleaning job. Wear slippers.
The ugly: in the summer, with no air-conditioning, rooms get hot. But if one sleeps with the window open, then it's as if one were sleeping through an action film with full sound effect because of the incessant traffic, sirens, motorcycles, drunks on the street. A slice of life no doubt but one needs a rest after staying here.
So, not all bad, but ...

Room Tip: Well, the river-facing rooms are the best if you can sleep with closed windows.

Too hot when you have warm weather in Paris. Otherwise, I would recommend this hotel, whenever weather is less than mid 20's Celcius. Great location. Great staff. Take the bigger double rooms on the upper floors. Great view. Noisy street with the windows open though. No screen on big double window. Bar open 24 hours, can bring drinks up to your room.

Room Tip: Great place if not during a hot spell, no A/C.

Stayed for a few nights in July 2013, and was quite disappointed, almost to the point of moving to another hotel. The only factor which stopped us doing that was the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. They were more than willing to assist with every enquiry. however, the owners of this hotel really need to make some investment in order to update what is a very tired and shabby establishment. In the public areas the chairs and sofas are grubby and worn, and varnished chairs quite worn. Air conditioning in at least some of the guest rooms is urgently needed, and even something as inexpensive as new towels and tea/coffee facilities in the rooms would all aid in making the accommodation more bearable. Unfortunately we don't think we could stay here again.

We stayed for a week in a large double room on the second floor.
This is a clean, comfortable hotel with an excellent view and very friendly staff. It's right across from the Louve and an easy walk to many museums and cafes. And you can catch the metro just down the street.
The room was big enough for both of us and all our luggage. We had a televison in our room but no english speaking channels (why watch tv when in Paris!).
Front desk staff was very helpful, they went out of their way to help us with a birthday gift for a friend and offered good suggestions for getting around the city.
Already looking forward to our next stay.

The location and the view are the two main selling points to this hotel, I don't know of any in Paris that offers a better combination. It was fun to know that we stayed in the same building where several famous people, including Richard Wagner and Oscar Wilde, have lived. Also, the staff was very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Plenty of closet space and an in-room safe made it very easy to store our many souvenirs!

The biggest drawback to the hotel was the lack of air conditioning. It was necessary to close the windows at night to block out the traffic noise (and the windows did an excellent job of that), but that made the room hot and stuffy during our July heat wave (37C) stay. The provided fan made the temperature barely tolerable, but I might reconsider my stay there if I was going to be in Paris in July again. The room was a little on the small side overall, but not out of line with many rooms we've had in lots of other big-city downtown locations.

Overall this was a very nice hotel and home base for our explorations of Paris, and we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again unless there was another heat wave!

Room Tip: 4th floor rooms have small balconies

I booked this hotel mainly because of the location and views, I was not disappointed by either. A short walk over the bridge to the Louvre and park, 10 minutes to the bars, shops and restaurants of the Latin quarter and about 15 minute stroll to the Eiffel Tower.
The hotel itself is looking a little worn. The bathroom was very small and the bedroom (no 21) was adequate but not deserving of the price and being described as a "Superior Room".
There was no extraction system in the bathroom, very small and old bath towels and a couple of sachets of shower cream. People with disabilities may find it beneficial to inquire in advance if their bath(shower bath) has a rail to aid access and a mat. Mine didn't.
Other negative points; No air conditioning, no facility to make drinks and no fridge to keep drinks cold. It was particularly hot when I was there 36c day and around 27c at night.
The view is certainly very hard to better, the rest can be improved by many of the hotels in Paris and a significant savings.
(At the time of writing this review the building next to the hotel is covered in scaffolding, though I did not experience any noise, it ruined the view when looking to the left).

We came here due to reasonable price, position and friend's recommendation.

Some famous names have stayed here.

The room is small and modest with a regular double bed against the wall and a shower so small that you have to open the door to pick up the soap or wash your feet. But we LOVE the view from our 4th floor balcony of the Louvre over the Seine river, with the lighted boats of excited visitors late into the night. It is so pretty that it is hard to close the window and draw the curtain when we go to bed. An effective fan ventilates the room with the balcony door /window closed.

Transport is convenient with many attractions within walking distance, Velib cycles over the road and Musee D'Orsay metro about 2 blocks away (although it is out of service this week).
Because it is so central we could pop home to refresh a few times each day.
Musee D'Orsay is literally in the next block.

Wifi works well although we found it best to log out each time and re enter username and password.

Front desk is manned 24 hours and are helpful with reasonable english.

Room Tip: The view is the big benefit. 4th floor have the best little balconies(total of 5 floors). 41, 42...
