We knew this old hotel had a good (only minus is the distance from any metro stops) left bank location right by the Seine. We weren't 100% sure that our view would be as advertised--but it was. And exactly the room (42 bis) with a little balcony we had requested months before when we reserved. We also worried that the facility might be a bit run down, but found only the stairway at the other end of the hall still undergoing renovation, and that area was clean--just not yet finished. Our room and the little lobby, etc. looked fine, the plumbing and elevator worked fine, and we saw no evidence of bugs, etc.

Service was great, especially from Louis--who was most helpful and exceptionally knowledgeable, probably better than most concierges at 4 and 5 star hotels. We would definitely stay there again--as would some friends who have stayed there, too--twice.

This Hotel is an absolute winner. We were in Paris for two weeks and decided to stay at a cheaper hotel before taking a side trip down the Loire Valley, then return to something grander for the last 3 nights.
We started at Hotel du Quai Voltaire, and for the price you pay this is absolute sensational value in Paris. The rooms were very clean, beds excellent and the fully tiled bathroom exceptional. Towels changed everyday.
Oh and did I mention the view? Our french doors (very effectively double glazed for sleeping!) opened out with the Seine and all it's boat action right below and the Louvre just across the river. At night you could just sit back and be entertained by the passing show. You really felt like you were living in Paris! The location is excellent for walking, the Musee D'Orsay virtually next door, there's a Metro not too far away (assembly National), and special mention must be made of the staff, who are all really great and very helpful. The first room we were shown was a bit small for us, but we were given a choice immediately of another. Try to get the fourth floor, ....(No. 42 bis is GREAT, it has two single beds but you can push them together) for the very best view and the balcony is wide enough to actually stand on. (The lower ones are not.) There's a small lift, a great breakfast room, a reading room, and they'll even lend you an iron and board at NO COST for any quick pressings.
Very safe area, plenty of brasseries and antique shops nearby, and the central location make this price superb value for Paris these days. In fact when we transferred to the dearer hotel later on, we actually missed Quai Voltaire and the view where there was always something to watch. They even looked after our heavier luggage we chose not to take down the Loire for nothing until we returned.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this friendly and clean hotel for value and comfort as a base for sightseeing in Paris.

We stayed here in Dec 07 and I have to say it was probably the worst experience I have had in any hotel. Although the location is stunning as are the views, nothing could make up for the dirty overpriced rooms and communal areas.

On checking in, we were shown to our room down a very grotty corridor. We were nearly knocked out by the smell of smoke when we opened the door and things went from bad to worse after that. The bed was tiny and very hard. Furniture was cheap and the carpet was dirty. The light fitting over the bed was coming away and looked like it would collapse on us in the middle of the night! The bath was dirty and there were pubic hairs on the floor! We complained at reception and the strange man there shrugged and said "in Paris it is OK to smoke in the rooms". He showed us another room which was equally as bad and smelly.

We stayed here for one night only although we had booked for 3 nights. We stayed out as late as possible to avoid spending too much time in the hotel as we found it totally depressing.

We are not fussy people and regularly stay in basic hotels all over Europe but this was totally unacceptable.

This location allowed us to visit the Louvre and return to our room by walking across the bridge. The front rooms have great views but are noisy due to constant street traffic. Ear plugs needed at night. As with many hotels in cities the back rooms on th eair shaft are quieter. We did not find many nearby restaurants. The Musea D'Orsay is also an easy walk. It probaby is a 2 star hotel and like most Paris hotels is expensive, but location makes up for a lot.
