I see the Louvre outside my window

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 Sept 2010
I stayed only 1 night in Paris so I looked for a place that was near several sites. It was very easy to get to the Louvre from here. Notre Dame is not too far away as is the Orsay Museum. I hopped on a batobus to go up and down the Seine River. The person at the front desk spoke English very well. The room I stayed was pretty accurate with their website. It was a narrow room. The bathrooms are small as they are at many European hotels. I spent most of my time in Paris walking around and sight seeing. I wasn't too concerned with having a lot of amenities. I checked in and took off across the Seine to the Louvre. In the morning, I walked down to the Notre Dame and ate breakfast at cafe right next to it.

We told the travel agent we wanted a quiet hotel in a central location. She got one out of two right. The location truly is fabulous; an easy walk to the Louvre, D'Orsay, Notre Dame, and the Latin Quarter. The first room we were given was on the second floor, with the view, but the traffic noise was unbelievable. Think Indy 500 loud. The room was small, stuffy and tired (however the bathrooms have recently been upgraded). Allegedly the traffic noise is not so bad on higher floors but I have no proof of this. We decided to bag the view and stay in an inside room (#46) with a view of an airshaft. The room turned out to be quiet, larger, cooler and we were happy. Decor is yard sale but clean. They were having some kind of special so the price was right. Staff is not overly friendly but they thawed after a while. Skip the ten euro breakfast and have the same exact thing somewhere else nearby for less. Check out the smallest house in Paris a few doors down.

If you're looking for convenience in walking to the Louvre, this is the hotel for you. It's directly across the Seine, just over the bridge. Beautiful views from the windows. However, this is a very old hotel, the hallways and staircase shows its age. Carpet is worn, rooms are tiny, bathroom barely big enough for one. But again, the location is perfect for visiting the Louvre and its just one block from the Museum de Orsay.

We stayed at the Hotel du Quai Voltaire on two different occasions. It has a great location right in the middle of Paris, all the major attractions are walkable and there is a great view across the Seine to the Louvre. It’s about an hour to Charles de Gaulle Airport (shuttle available) and only a few minutes by taxi to Gare d’Austerlitz.

The rooms are small as are most budget hotels but was clean and comfortable with an air cooler in the room. The noise from motor scooters and sirens was an issue at times. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was basic but enjoyable. There are a number of cafes and restaurants nearby with a supermarket around the corner.

We would certainly stay here again and would recommend it to other travelers.

Brilliant situation on the bank of the Seine opposite the Louvre. Therefore wonderful view, walk accross the bridge through the Louvre to Palais Royale Metro or down the bank to Orsay. (Tip go to the Orangery museum and get a joint ticket to save queuing at Gare d' Orsay). But this is a busy road at times with noisy police &c going past.
Rooms clean but small. Staff friendly and helpful. Staicase needs decoration (they have had the electricians in!) but main rooms OK. Wife feels it is home from home. I found the bed a little firm for me. (NB normal double beds) Remember it is a 2 star rating in a 5 star location. They will bring breakfast up to your room. Bar but no other catering.

We knew this old hotel had a good (only minus is the distance from any metro stops) left bank location right by the Seine. We weren't 100% sure that our view would be as advertised--but it was. And exactly the room (42 bis) with a little balcony we had requested months before when we reserved. We also worried that the facility might be a bit run down, but found only the stairway at the other end of the hall still undergoing renovation, and that area was clean--just not yet finished. Our room and the little lobby, etc. looked fine, the plumbing and elevator worked fine, and we saw no evidence of bugs, etc.

Service was great, especially from Louis--who was most helpful and exceptionally knowledgeable, probably better than most concierges at 4 and 5 star hotels. We would definitely stay there again--as would some friends who have stayed there, too--twice.
