Arrived at the Hotel at around 7:30pm, 28th August with my friends for a trip to Paris. Admittedly, the journey was made ever so slightly more fiddly because of the temporary closure of the Metro 5 line between Bastilles and Place D'Italie; however this was no real problem as a replacement bus service was provided.

My friends and I were expecting, after having read the other reviews online, to walk into a urine-soaked, hell hole. This was not the case. We were greeted by a kindly, talkative and very welcome gentleman who dealt with our reservation with a sophisticated efficiency.

The room, standard, was perfect for our stay. Clean, with a very utile AC system, the room met our requirements in terms of both comfort and hygiene. Comestible prices are somewhat steep and there may be the odd bit of dirt in the southwest corner of the shower screen, but nothing more than you could very well expect to find in your own home. The building was pleasingly quaint and quirky and, besides its positioning next to a Pompes Funebres, was located in a seemingly not-too-touristy neighbourhood around the corner from a lovely boulangerie.

On leaving the hotel, we were asked if we enjoyed our (short) stay to which our answer was a unanimous 'oui'. The other reviews given are an exaggeration of some minor faults and we gladly informed the concierge that we would take steps to advocate a fair case. For a reasonably priced hotel, booked through Eurostar, we are satisfied that Villa Lutece would be re-visited if we returned together and would encourage you not to be discouraged by reviews of the seemingly unimpressed.

Room Tip: We stayed in 316; that zone seems to be on a quiet side of the hotel.

I stayed there with my wife for 3 days in late August. This is a [--] hotel I can't believe it is rated 4stars. I am going to ask for a refund.

When we arrived we got assigned a standard double room in the back of the hotel. The room is so small there's no room to move. We had the bed, the chair and the tv cabinet and there's no more room to even move or sit or put up luggage. I didn't say anything during the stay cause I didn't know better. But now I had a second look at the photos on the website the standard room have a coffee table and a spa and much much bigger than the room I had. I hate people who pray on tourist like me who don't speak French and think can get away with it.

[--] this hotel please stay away from this.

I recently stayed at Villa Lutece Port Royal hotel (22-27 August). The hotel was a 4 star rated hotel which is overrated. I would rate the hotel as an average 3 star. Based in a quiet area near to the metro, although the nearest station was closed for repair there was another station within a 10 minute walk. Our room was pleasant quirky but far too small.(not as shown in their photos) clean towels every day but no real cleaning of the bath or bedroom floor. We didn't have breakfast as it was pricey and it is easy to find somewhere cheaper and more pleasant to eat. The automatic main door was temperamental, sometimes opened straight away other times had to wait. Surroundings lovely maintained square opposite hotel but always had 'vagrants' in the square. I would advise to look for another hotel.

Based in a quiet area but near to Mouff'tard and some lovely restaurants. Also a nice walk up to Notre Dam and that part of the city. Hotel is clean, quirky and well maintained. Breakfast is extra but probably better to enjoy a classic french breakfast at a local cafe/restaurant. The hotel itself is quite expensive but good deals are available if you book along with your Eurostar ticket.

We arrived on 11th of July for a four night stay and all I can say is we were very lucky to have found this hotel. Although the nearest Metro station was closed for repair there were two other stations within a 10 minute walk. The hotel was in a pleasant neighbourhood and at no time did we feel unsafe either day or night. The rooms were clean, excellently decorated, and our one had a balcony that overlooked a little park. Although the on site breakfast was a little pricey we got around that by buying pastries from one or the local patisseries. All in all would thoroughly recommend.

Booking through Eurostar, this hotel appeared to have some attractive features and was conveniently located, close to a metro station. However, the journey was a nightmare between July 14 and August 17, when Line 5 was closed for repairs to the viaduct up from Austerlitz. A stranger to Paris, without Google maps or a 3G connection would have been stumped. Not the hotel's fault, but some prior advice would ave been helpful. The nightmare journey did not prepare us well for the fact that the official photographs did not represent the majority of the rooms - tiny, dingy, poorly lit and unwelcoming. One of the reasonable reviews on this site has photographs of the room (or one very similar) that we were allocated behind the lift on the upper floors, so I won't add any of mine. Suffice it to say, the room was totally inadequately sized for the double bed it contained.
As to cleanliness - a stained towel, dirty stained bed cover, hair in the bed and the worst of all, a disgustingly chipped toilet seat (again another reviewer posted a photograph of a similar chipped toilet seat). On complaining, as we escaped the place for the afternoon, the smiling front desk man reported that he'd send someone up to inspect. On our return, said person couldn't find anything wrong! Photograph evidence, 'technician' visit and deposit of stained towel on front desk proved otherwise, and I insisted, on escaping for the evening to meet with my niece, the toilet seat be replaced or we be moved. On our return, different man at desk, who knew nothing! To be fair, the toilet seat was replaced the next day, however, the dinginess, the poor light, the cramped room and the dirty bed cover remained. I should have insisted on a move to a different room.
Other facilities - breakfast was over-priced, bar was never manned, automatic main door was temperamental.
Surroundings - not the best area of Paris, some odd characters around at night, 'vagrants' in the square and in front of the hotel, funeral parlour next door. Convenient Carrefour round the corner and a shop front vending facility for late night requirements. Access would have been better if the Campo Formio metro station had been open, but not too bad a walk to/from Austerlitz or Place d'Italie during the day (could be a bit scary at night, for some)
We did not enjoy our stay in this hotel for the above reasons.

After reading the reviews below I was a little wary of the hotel we had booked, but on arrival these trepidations were proven to be false. The location was in more of a residential neighbourhood but it was in no way unsafe. The Hotel itself was very welcoming, and the staff were very friendly.

On checking we were told our room was ready, but on entering we found it was not. The concierge was very apologetic about this and the problem was rectified within 20 minutes. Once we were able to get into our room we found it to be very nice. it was a very decent size with plenty of storage space and a large spacious, clean bathroom.

During our trip the closest metro stop was under maintenance, but there were two other metro options, both easily with a 10 minute walk. The other reviews claiming that a taxi was needed were truly unjust, the area was very safe. Unless you have never visited a mid-large size city in your life before you would understand this. There are also several Vélib (rentable bicycles) stations around the hotel which are very fun and useful.

Checkout was at 12 rather than the usual 10 and we were able to leave our bags in the hotel's locked baggage room for the day while we visited more of the city.

Overall this is a great hotel if you get it at a good price. We paid £180 for Eurostar and two nights, so a great deal. The reception desk has a sign with prices starting from €440 so book in advance!
