“Lovely atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 September 2013

I stayed in Hotel Istria with my wife and sister-in-law in early September. The staff were friendly and helpful at all times. It was a perfect location as I was researching the haunts of Casimir Markievicz who had a studio a few doors away in the early 1900s. The Metro was a few steps away and we were in central Paris in minutes. As for eating the incomparable Rotonde was a short walk away. We'll be back!

This hotel is in an excellent location, very close to Tour Montparnasse, a number of different metro lines and some very useful bus services. Restaurants and a supermarket are also a short walk away. Rooms are typical of Paris (small) but do have tea/coffee making facilities and a minibar with room for your own purchases. The lift is tiny, but at least they have one.

However, unlike others who have reviewed recently, I found the staff in this hotel to be unhelpful and indifferent when compared to staff in hotels in Italy and Provence, but maybe this is the Paris way. After several days staying at the hotel (which only has about 25 rooms) the desk clerk who had checked me in and dealt with me several times since then still acted like she had no idea who I was.

While not dirty, I also did not find the hotel to be particularly clean - there were long black hairs on my bathroom floor after the room had been cleaned. They also did not replace used plastic glasses during the course of my stay, meaning that by the end of my stay I only had the coffee mug to drink from.

This is not a bad hotel, but I must say that the attitude of the staff was less than welcoming, and I would probably not stay there again because of this.

Hotel Istria was perfect for our needs.....modestly priced but had everything that we needed. Friendly staff (patiently helped us figure out the machines in a laundromat down the street), clean, and in an interesting but peaceful neighborhood somewhat away from the more touristy area right around Tour Montparnasse. Rooms are very small as was the elevator (4 person maximum) and bathroom, but not unexpected. Close to Cimitiere Montparnasse in which can be found the permanent residences of numerous famous French. Also steps away from the Raspail Metro stop.

Stayed at Istria 2 times in May for roughly 2 weeks. Wonderful location and good helpful staff..Breakfast is ok and coffee is good. Rooms are small and clean but hey,the price is right! andif you ever fall in the room a bed will break your fall!!
One thing I wish they would install is a hand bar in the showers to hold onto as you shower..slippery floor!!! could be dangerous for people unsure on feet. Overall, a good experience and I'd certainly return.. location is idea and neighbourhood really fascinating!!!l!!! Heated towel bars in bathroom are great for overnight drying of clothes.

Room Tip: I stayed on 5th and 1st both ok....prefer a street room

If you are looking for a Paris hotel that is in a great neighborhood on the Left Bank, steps from the metro station, very reasonably priced and clean and comfortable, this is it. Of course the rooms are small. Unless you are paying a few hundred euros a night, most hotel rooms in Paris will be small. But who wants to spend time in a hotel room when in Paris? This small hotel is located in my favorite area of Paris, close to lots of restaurants, cafes and, importantly, very convenient to the Raspail metro station. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. The hotel is located on a small street off of Raspail, with very little traffic noise. My room was on "the garden" which made it even quieter. Breakfast wasn't anything special, but there are plenty of cafes very close by, and an excellent boulangerie a short block away. The only negative is that many others like the hotel also, so you need to book early as it is generally fully booked.

We chose this hotel on balance due to its location and price, as the hotels closer to the city centre seemed exorbitantly priced. While it's not in the heart of Paris, it's a 2 minute walk from the Raspail underground railway station, and approximately 10 minutes from the major RER B line that services Gare du Nord and Charles de Gaulle airport. It's relatively close to restaurants in Montparnasse and shops, and the main attractions in Paris can be easily accessed by public transport. Montparnasse is a quiet area in Paris so you could get a good night's sleep. The room itself was clean, however the toilet area and shower was cramped. The staff there were very kind and also spoke English.
