“Friendly reception, slippery stairs”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2013

There were more amenities at this hotel than some other hotels we stayed at in Paris - a fan, blowdryer, bar-fridge, safe and TV.The reception staff were friendly and helpful, the beds and pillows comfortable. On the negative side, the stairs were treacherously slippery, there were no sheer curtains to provide privacy from the opposite windows and the bedroom lights were inadequate. Even so, we would probably stay here again because we liked the staff member with the twinkling, kind brown eyes!

We stayed here for one night before our flight out of CDG. It is very convenient if you are arriving for leaving from Gare de l' Est, it is across the street. There is a metro entrance and bus stop right in front of the hotel. The hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful; we were able to request a room on a high floor so we could leave our window open at night. Our room was at the back and it was very quiet for a peaceful night's sleep. No A/ C, but even on an unusually warm night it was fine with the open window and fan. Room was very clean and reasonably sized for a triple. Flat screen TV, minibar and good Wifi. Bathroom was of a good size and clean. Only thing we didn't like was that the temperature of the water and the water pressure changed abruptly from hot to cold and strong to a dribble while you showered. Hotel offered breakfast, but we didn't take it. There is a Monop grocery store right around the corner and a boulangerie across from that. The Canal St. Martin neighborhood with its many cafes, wine bars and restaurants is a 5 or 10 minute walk east of the hotel. This was a good budget stay.

The hotel is well located - besides the Gare de l´Est (metro, trains) and it is in walking distance e.g. to Montmartre. Only there are bus stops and the Noctilien (night buses) might be a bit disturbing. The staff was ok - they speak English but are glad if you speak French :-) The room was clean but the whole hotel looks "a bit too old" and needs refurbishment (new carpets, furniture...).

As we had planned to spend a week in early May doing a lot of sightseeng and a bit of shopping, we found the hotel quite up to our expectations. It means that it's within walking distance to nearly all tourist atrractions, Place Opera where we could easily take LesCarsRouges excursions round the city and along the Seine River, #11 Avenue l'Opera where we could book and take amazing tours of Versailles and Chateaux de la Loire, and last but not least - Rue Rivoli with all its shops. Besides, the location is really convenient due to its being close to Gare de Nord where trains from and to Charles de Gaulle Airport run every 20 minutes. The neighbourhood is really busy both daytime and nighttime, the more so our room faced Boulevard de Strasbourg with a view of Gare de l'Est, anyway, it didn't prevent us from having a good night's sleep even with the window open. By the way, the double glazing is really sound-proof and can protect the room from any street noise. Though the hotel facade and the lobby look a bit shabby and the room cramped, we quite soon got used to it, found everything quite secure, and had nothing to complain about. Our room was always tidy and clean, so were the bed-clothes and towels, and we found the bed comfortable, too. The reception staff were really friendly and always ready to help with all sort of information and recommendations. The American bufet breakfast (at extra price of 7.5 euros per person) was beyond our expectations with its freshly made coffee, hot and cold fresh milk, juices, variety of yougurts, tea, fruit salad, cheese, ham, boiled eggs, delicious croissants, honey, jams, etc. Actually, first we planned to try different breakfasts at different places but soon we changed our mind and remained loyal to Modern Est tiny and cosy breakfast room. The only little inconvenience during our stay was that when using the free Wi-Fi, every other day we had to ask the receptionist for a new password. As a whole, staying at Modern Est is value for money if to take into account Paris being one of the most expensive cities in the world!

Modern Est is located opposite Gare de l'Est and an easy 5/10 min walk from Gare du Nord.
The secure entrance can look rather unwelcoming, but the reception staff were pleasant (and spoke reasonable English) and check-in was straight forward.
Like most central Paris hotels, there is not a lot of space in the rooms (or lobby/lift/stairs). Room and shower room were both clean, and if you aren't looking for much more than somewhere to base yourself and sleep, the Modern Est is ideal.

Free wi-fi for use in the rooms is of good reliable service, just get the code from the reception on check-in. Hotel is basic, so don't expect business centre services etc.
don't forget there will be room tax on your booking ($1/2 per night)

For a low-cost trip to one of the more expensive european capitals, this hotel can be a good choice. For 80 euros (single) I think it's the best you can find in the city almost centre. Not plenty of space (rooms & Public areas), but overall nice & clean. (not a too old apearance)
A few steps in front of Gare de l'Est, (which make it quite noisy with open window) it is also at walking distance from the main "Boulevards", Montmartre (Sacré-Coeur), Pigalle (Moulin Rouge) & Republique.
Breakfast (charged apart) good enough for the price.

I chose this hotel for our 6 night stay in a double room, because the one I was used to was fully booked at the time I was supposed to go to Paris. I was intruiged by its location (a few steps from gare de l'est, and lots of bus stops), the reviews on tripadvisor were encouraging and also the price and the photos.

Our stay was almost perfect except for two points:
1. Gare de l'est location is not exaxtly perfect, if you're used to stay at city center (near chatelet), you would feel uncomfortable with the amount of transportation you have to change to move from one point to another. However, there are buses right infront of the hotel that takes you right to cdg airport, an another to denfret rochareau (the one that the orlybus stops at going to orly airport) which was really convienient.
* although this point is not directly related to the hotel, but I feel obliged to mention it.

2. There was an incident which happend to us, at some point, I couldn't find my pair of shoes and pair of slippers, I turned the room upside down looking for them but in vain, we tried asking the housekeeping lady about them (she didn't speak any english) so we turned to the reception, which was actually petty rude, he told us that no way the housekeeping would've taken them, and he was like so what's your conclusion, it's like we're accusing them of being thieves. Ok I see you, but where are they???? I don't think I would've hidden them or something. Anyways, he said he's going to ask housekeeping and get back to us, which he didn't, although we left after a while right infront of him and he didn't say anything at all. After some thinking I figured out something, there's a rubbish bin next to the door where we put plastic bags and other unwanted stuff, my guess that I mistakenly left them NEXT to it, so it was considered rubbish, hence, thrown out. I'm speechless beyond that point if that was actually the case.

Anyways, that's a personal case, dunno if it would happen to anybody else, so generally about the hotel's Pros:
1. english speeking reception staff
2. there's no A/C but there's a fan.
3. sound-proof windows since sometimes it could be noisy outside.
4. a number of restaurants around the block. and a supermarket.
5. if you have a late flight out of paris, you could leave your luggage at the hotel and pick it up later.

Overall, I don't recommend this hotel, and I won't choose it for further stays in Paris.
