+ The best thing about this hotel was that the metro station is just near the house. The room was small but clean.
- One of the staff is really impolite and very arrogant. Terrible attitude.
The walls were so thin that you could clearly hear other people talking.

We stayed for five nights at this hotel, which is perfectly located right in front of a subway station, 7 minutes away from Paris downtown. We took a bus from the Charles de Gaulle airport for a few euros, and the Gare d'Est bus station is 25 meters from the hotel entrance.
The service was great, there was always someone at the reception desk. The surroundings are not the greatest, but we never felt unsafe in the area. There are a lot of restaurants within 5 minutes of walking, some with pretty decent prices (for Paris).
The breakfast is pretty basic, but it's 7 euros.
The room we stayed in was small, but not as small as I thought after reading some reviews in here. It's a pretty basic hotel, the washroom was refurbished long time ago, but was functional.
The bed sheets were never changed for the duration of our stay, which was a minus. Other than that, the hotel was OK. We would go there again.

We were 4 of our family booked 2 rooms for 3 nights and 4 days during may 2008. Front desk was able to provide 2 adjacent rooms. One room was very small, bath was further small.

The rooms were neat and kept clean throughout our stay.
Lift was small but okay, was working well. front desk was helpful.

Advantage is the proximity to the metro which is right in front.
The disadvantage if i can say is the frequency of L'open tour buses to this area is poor. But the bus stop is near to this hotel.

Soundproofing of the walls are inadequate. We have to bear the the noises of the honeymoon couple next room

If one can discount the both it would be a perfect stay.

Sometimes you go to a holiday hotel to be a bit pampered and get the sort of luxury you don't get at home. Sometimes you go to a hotel because it's inexpensive and well located so you can explore the area. Hotel Modern'Est falls perfectly into that second category.

My son and I came for two nights and three days in October 2008. We booked a twin room with bath which is what we got. We arranged by email beforehand to leave our luggage with them mid-morning so we could go exploring, which we did without problem.

The hotel itself is spread over 5 floors and has a small but perfectly functional lift. The interior is rather gloomily decorated but our room was clean, a decent size for the two of us, with crisp bed linen and plenty of pillows. The room had a flat screen TV, a minibar and a some sort of air-conditioner which we did not use. The beds were comfortable, the room was quiet and it was an ideal place to rest up the sore feet and get ready for the next day's tourism!

Breakfast was served downstairs between 6.30 and 9.30 and was a buffet selection of juices, cereal, bread, ham, cheese, eggs, croissants and pain au chocolat. Also extremely good coffee. We paid 6 Euros each for this and it more than set us up until lunchtime.

The hotel is about 7 minutes walk from the Gare du Nord and the Gare de l'Est metro station is about ten steps from the hotel entrance! (Use exit 8). You can be down at Notre Dame in about ten minutes without changing.

We came back in the evenings to rest before eating and there are any number of eating places around this area of all different sorts so unless you want something really special there's no need to go back into the centre again.

The staff were friendly and helpful. On our last day we left our bags in the lobby until our train left in the evening and again that was not a problem.

I would definitely recommend Hotel Modern'Est for any one "doing" Paris by Eurostar - really couldn't have been easier.

Pros:
- the position is great, very close to Gare de l'Est, the metro is a few meters away and well served during the night too by the Noctilien bus lines. RER lines are close because Gare du Nord is a metro stop away.
- free internet access, they have a pc downstairs so you can use it for urgent things
- the room was clean, the bathroom was tidy

Cons:
- noisy: i had a room facing the backyard where there's a big demolition/building yard, the noise starts early in the morning. I guess the works will go on for a couple of months so if you plan to come back late/ sleep in the morning look for another hotel
- smoke: there's no choice between smokers/non smokers, in the room i had there was a persistent smell
- towels: one on 3 has spots/stains

I think i won't go back there, i'll search more carefully the next time... and i won't trust anymore the hotel website, the pics have nothing to do with the things i've seen!

We are a young couple, in our mid 20s, in Paris for 3 days. This hotel is perfect if you are coming from Gare du Nord. It is less than 10 minutes away from the station and very well located to access the heart of the city. There is a tube station about 5 metres from the entrance. We would walk towards the rue de sebastopol and access all the restaurants and cafes in less than 10 minutes walk. Our room was clean, had a fridge for refreshments, a shower, soap, shampoo and towels, the bed was very comfortable. albeit small, it was spacious enough for both of us and just what we needed, a good bed to sleep on and a clean toilet and shower. We paid about 200 euros including breakfast, which i dont think was very expensive, given the reputation paris has as a very expensive city. I wouldn't mind staying there again.

Stayed her from october the 19th to the 26th and we had a pretty good time. This is a great little hotel which is ideal for backpackers, those travelling solo, budget travelers, etc. Not so good for those on honeymoon, or with kids. When we first arrived i noticed that there was a porn shop about 3 buildings down but we never walked in that direction so it didnt bother us, yet it might bother one of those people who has a heart attack when someone curses in front of their kids. Gare del Est metro station is literally under the hotel and we could feel some of the metros when they departed, but it wasnt enough to annoy us, we actually enjoyed it as we dont have a metro here in Orlando.

Room was small like the rest in Europe but SOOOOO comfortable. This was our first time in Paris so we spent 14-16 hours a day on the street, and the room was SOOOO good to come to at the end of every day. Gare del Est Train station is a good 30 second walk (literally across the street) and the metro entrance is about 20 feet so it is extremely convenient. You cant ask for more at 69euro per night. So if your going to Paris and will only use your room to shower and sleep, this is the place to stay. Now if you want something Ritz-like with a pool, great view, waiters and chefs, and be in the room 12 hours a day, then go somewhere else.
