“Small is beautiful!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 September 2011

We spent three very comfortable nights during a hot September week. The hotel was recommended by a colleague who says this is his regular pied-a-terre when in Paris and if you need to be in this part of town, I would certainly recommend the Daval.
It's tucked away at the side of the Place de la Bastille. Maybe not the best address, but the hotel itself is spotlessly clean and quiet and the staff outstandingly friendly. Ask for a room at the back, it's the quietest as they overlook an attractive courtyard, rather than the busy little street below. Also be aware that storage space is limited so you may be a little crushed if you are doing the Grand Tour and have piles of luggage. One other note - the beds are single and a half size, rather than full double, so it's a cosy fit for two - and if you want to book a twin, rather than a double, make sure that this is what you are getting as our group didn't...
The neighbourhood is full of bars and small restaurants patronised by young Parisians and rocks until the small hours.
Altoghther, good value and plenty of Parisian atmosphere.

Room Tip: 21, 31 and 41 overlook the courtyard - anything that side is recommended.

Pros: Good location. Decent sized room and bathroom for the price. Very clean. GREAT SERVICE, they even helped me book a dentist appointment when I cracked a filling!

Cons: A bit noisy, so if you are a light sleeper or go to bed early it might be a problem. The lift is only 60cm x 90cm if that matters to you.

Rooms were clean. They were small, but typical for Paris hotels in this price range. The neighborhood isnt the most attractive, and is very loud. My key was on several occasions given to me by staff who didn't recognize me--something of a security issue. The desk staff were unhelpful and unwilling to offer advice or assistance when I had some difficulties.

The staff at the hotel was really friendly. The hotel is air-conditionned, which is a big advantage in the summer. We had a room in the back, overlooking a lovely typically parisian courtyard. It was really quiet. As mentionned by other travelers, the rooms are very clean but tiny, and the bathrooms even tinier. However, even though we had 4 persons and as many suitcases, we magically still had place to move around. For 2-3 nights, the lack of space was not an issue for us, nor for the kids. The area around the hotel is lively, but it isn't unsafe, even late at night. The location, 5 minutes away from the Marais, is excellent.

I'm a bit puzzled by the review commenting on the " interesting area " and the need to avoid Rue Richard Lenoir. I'm not sure why you would even need to be on that street anyway, the metro station doesn't open on to it and the adjoining streets are perfectly respectable. Rue de la Rocquette is the exit from the metro I used and it's a hustling, bustling street with lots of restaurants, bars, take-aways and proper local shops.

I booked this hotel as it's near Cafe De la Danse and I was going to a show there on my own. I wanted a clean , safe hotel near the venue.I was planning on doing lots if shopping so didn't want to spurge on a hotel.
This ticked all the boxes. The rooms are small.I booked a double room and it was fine for me. Room and hotel were scrupulously clean and also looked very fresh and well maintained. I liked the fact the room and shower-room had very clean wood floors.Staff without exception were friendly and helpful. I asked for and got a h a room at the back and it was very quiet.
Also , as some-one else has commented there were a surprising number of useful free toiletries included. I liked the area. There is a lot going on in the immediate vicinity but there's nothing to scare any-one and the hotel is very near Bastille metro station which gets you wherever you want very quickly. The hotel is also 5 minutes from Place des Voges which is one of the most beautiful squares in Paris

Overall, inside our hotel room we felt very safe. The room was small, but very clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful. This is a no frills hotel near the Bastille, but not much else.

I had a few concerns about the neighborhood and the general location of the hotel. During our stay there was a large protest at the Bastille. Furthermore, friends of ours on a study abroad program had been instructed to never walk up or down Richard Lenoir by themelves or even in groups at night. The main road near this hotel is Richard Lenoir. That unsettled us as many interesting characters stayed and slept on park benches.

At night, it felt much safer in the neighborhood behind the Bastille because of all the bars/restaurants. There were many more people out at night.

We avoided the metro exit at the Bastille stop that actually led to the Bastille because of the protestors and other interesting people.

It could just have been the time of year, but the neighborhood is not one the safest, cleanest, or nicest in Paris. If you are female and travelling alone-- or even with just female friends, my advice would be to stay somewhere else. If you do stay here, check on the protests to see if they are still active and always keep your wits about you.

My husband and I stayed in Hotel Daval for 3 nights while exploring Paris (basically, doing all the standard touristy things).
LOCATION. The location is phenomenal - 1 min away from a metro station (metro line takes you to all the touristy attractions within 7 mins), 5 mins cab ride to a train station, with plenty of bars and restaurants next door to the hotel open at any time of day and night.
ROOMS. Unlike in many other 2 star hotels, there is an elevator (which is nice since there are 4 floors to the hotel). The rooms are not big, but of very decent size (we stayed in a twin room 403 on 4th floor) and they are spotless clean. The bathroom is tiny, but really - what else do you need? There is a shower and a sink, and a toilet... And again, all spotless clean. The beds are comfy - not too firm and not too soft.
All in all, Hotel Daval offers phenomenal value at 89-98 euro per room per night. We did so much research to find a great hotel for the Parisian part of our trip and we are super happy with our choice! We are returning to Paris for 1 more night on the way back to the US, and we are staying in Hotel Daval again.
