If you fight wars and have an empire, you can take loot from the ancient world like this. It's ancient and impressive but in the middle of a horrible traffic circle so very hard to get a good look unless you want to risk your life.

The obelisk was taken for Luxor, Egypt. It is carved from a single piece of stone and is thousands of years old. It is kept in excellent condition and very well presented.

Our hotel was nearby so we walked by this daily. So much history surrounds this obelisk and square. Everyone should see this.

This Obelisk, which is made of yellow granite and weighs over 250 tonnes, stands 23 metres (including the pedestal) above, and in the middle of, the Place de la Concorde. The Obelisk is covered with hieroglyphics celebrating the reign of the great Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II and is over 3,300 years old. As the Obelisk was absent its original gold cap when it came to Paris, the French government added a gold leafed cap in 1998. There are also gold leaf drawings on the pedestal detailing the machinery used for its transportation to, and erection in, Paris.

The obelisk was one of two that originally stood outside of the Temple of Luxor in Egypt. The other Obelisk, thankfully, remains standing guard at the entrance to the Temple.

The Obelisk was apparently offered to France in 1829 by the then ruler of Egypt in exchange for a mechanical clock that was subsequently allegedly found to be faulty. Great deal that one.

Having been lucky enough to stand in front of the remaining Obelisk guarding the entrance to the Temple of Luxor less than 12 months ago I can honestly say that the Obelisk in the Place de la Concorde looks well and truly to be out of place.

Clearly visible from afar, the obelisk at Place de la Concorde is a historical landmark and a piece of beauty.
