“Best-kept secret in Paris”

If you have a Romantic mindset and don't mind bunk beds, you can't do better than Les Maisons Internationale de la Jeunesse et des Etudiants (MIJE) in the Marais of Paris, one block from the Seine -- for about 32 Euros. And that includes breakfast and bottomless coffee! I have now stayed at least three times at each old mansion, but this hostel, Hotel Maubisson on rue des Barres, feels like home. The hostel is a Tudor building on a pedestrian walkway snuggled into a courtyard close to St. Gervais Church and several decent restaurants. From your bunk, you will hear those church bells toll as well as those of Notre Dame, a very short walk away. The location is astonishing: a block from the Seine, close to Metro St. Paul, rue de Rivoli buses, and Franprix grocery. You will meet friendly people from all over the world. I especially enjoy meeting the school groups and their teachers, read: expect noisy breakfasts. This hostel does have a lift, but you must walk a couple of blocks for dinner (extra). Breakfast is served in the heavy-beamed dining room. Book rooms 45 days in advance; don't wait as it is very popular with the school groups. I absolutely LOVE this place and cannot wait to return!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the courtyard and late night singers and revlers at the restaurants will be either &quo...

Hostel was clean enough and the beds were comfortable enough. But I found there was more families there than young backpackers. The hostel always seemed deserted and no one was ever in the common area, it was almost creepy. Besides the lack in people the place was fine to sleep. Great location!! Hard to find though.

The location was great - close to metro stops and shops! My room was clean, and there were no bed bugs! (I was worried after reading some reviews) I stayed in a 4 bedroom dorm which was pretty small!! It's not a good place for meeting people because they dont have a common room.. I was very disappointed that this hostel didnt have wifi especially because it was advertised on their website. Luckily there is a Mcdonalds close by with free wifi. Breakfast was average but did the job. My room key stopped working nearly every day which was frustrating and it was annoying that you had to be buzzed in by reception whenever you wanted to enter the hostel. I understand the reviews now that say this is more for school groups than solo travellers, there seemed to be a new group of noisy school kids arriving each day! Over all it was ok.. but the atmosphere wasn't great. It might be better if you are traveling with friends.

I stayed here with my school for a long weekend and I thoroughly enjoyed the stay. As it was my first time staying in a hostel, I can definitely say that it exceeded my expectations. Me and my friends stayed in a 3 Bed room which consisted of a set of bunk bed2 and 1 single but it was very spacious. Sharing a toilet was not a problem for me as it was right outside our room but we all had sinks and a shower in our rooms. the location was really great as it was only 3-5 mins walk away from the Notre-Dame but if you had your window open during the night, it could get a bit noisy. The food was basic, but edible. All together, a very enjoyable stay.

I stayed here for like 2 weeks and I can only say, it is the best.
Very cheap and nice food. Especialy the wildlife in my room was incomparable.
The food was just bad, it smelled bad and tasted like sulfid.
I am glad I survived my stay. And the beds are even worse, you could as well sleep on the ground, maybe that is even better.
But I like it very much, the view was stunning. But I didn't like the look of the hotel from the outside. It was just so modern!!!! And the service was excellent, they just screamed at you, very nice. The bathroom was comfortable, I have only a few remarks. The shower was or boiling or freezing, so i didn't wash in 2 weeks. And the toilet was

This was the worst hotel I've ever been.
The food was verry verry verry bad. And for breakfast you get only ONE little croissant, a half old piece of bread and one glass of orange-juice.
The room was small but okay.
The smell in the hotel was bad.

I have stayed here twice on school trips with our high-school group. This is a very affordable, no-frills place to stay. The breakfast is basic, but good. The rooms are spacious enough. The shared toilet facilities don't bother me, but they may some people. The toilets are cleaned everyday and weren't too bad. It's good to have the shower in the room at least.

The location is amazing, close to many Paris attraction and lots of cafes only metres from the entrance. There is also a local fresh produce market about 200m away on weekends and Wednesday(I think)...brilliant patisseries, metro stations and shopping very close-by. It's only about 5-10minutes walk to Notre Dame and the Seine river.

Most of the rooms are exposed to some type of street noise (either the alley, or church direction). If you keep the windows closed it is quieter. It is opposite a church where some homeless people seem to live...they can be very noisy at all hours of the night. We have never had any security problems here. They have a night security man on duty all night.

There is no road directly to the hotel, it is off small alleys and foot paths. The rooms that back onto a courtyard are probably the quietest. We were there in summer, so had to have the windows open for air and to cool the room down (no Air con).

The lift is small, but it works, so if you don't want to climb lots of stairs you have another option.

If you want something central and affordable (so you can spend your pennies on fun stuff) basic and comfortable, then this is the place. We stay here because you just can't beat the location and we can handle the other more frustrating elements.

Room Tip: Try and get a room that overlooks the central courtyard...it may be quieter...
