First, the good stuff: When I emailed requesting a room with a shower rather than a bath, Shyam, as delightful over email as he turned out to be in person, upgraded us at no extra charge, to ensure that we got a great shower, and it WAS great. We ended up for five nights in a newly renovated little kitchenette/studio suite just next door to the hotel. It was on the ground floor, double paned to eliminate street noise, and hilariously modern. The window shades were operated electronically, and the "canopy" over the (very comfortable) queen size bed was a plastic rectangle with pinholes of colored lights that looked like a canopy of stars changing color overhead. The shower had three settings for the spray: hand held, overhead large square rain showerhead, or three wall mounted heads that sprayed horizontally. Best shower ever.
And the suite was immaculately clean.
The location was excellent. We walked to Notre Dame in about twenty minutes. Just across the street was a gorgeous metro stop, Arts et Metiers, which looked like a copper steampunk dream. And right next door to that was a little bakery, where every day we got quiches, croissants, etc. for breakfast. After several days, the salesgirl knew us well enough to give us extra (free) croissants and sandwiches as the bakery would be closed the next day for our train ride out of Paris.
Now the down side: Although the room itself was perfect (five stars), the internet reception was terrible. We kept losing the signal, and it was always very weak. Right next door in the hotel it was at full strength. Also, the hallway smelled mildewed, though that was not present at all in the room. The rest of that building was full of noisy residents, one of whom was pretty crazy. To be fair, I was sick, so wanted to sleep earlier at night and later in the morning than I usually would. Without that, I don't think I would even have been there for their comings and goings. Shyam did offer for us to change rooms if we wanted to, but we were settled in and decided to stay put. Those factors, which wouldn't be present in the hotel itself, bring it down to four stars from five.
