We tracked it down and put our lock on another lock as the bridge is full of locks, and you can't find a piece of the bridge to put one on! We through our key into the Seine river, but missed the shot!
Nice view of the back of Notre Dame from the bridge

So before leaving for Paris, my friends told me about this bridge! Now... currently without a significant other, I wrote my initials with those of my best friends. A short walk from Notre Dame... and what a sight! You know right away when you see it. Hundreds of thousands of locks left by others in hope of "locking" their love forever :)

Totally free attraction! It's nice to spend some time just looking at all the locks and pondering about the people who put them there. If you're lucky, you can find a spot on the bridge itself to lock to.. most locks are on top of other locks.

P.S. the tradition is to throw away the keys in the river after to lock !

Please don't think that the bridge near the Louvre is the lock bridge... you need to visit Pont de l'Archeveche in the Latin Quarter near Notre Dame. It is amazing to see the number of locks that have been added over the years.. so romantic and amazing... There are some vendors near there that sell gold locks and some will offer you a sharpie to write on the lock. Just find a spot to attach and throw away the key!

We had to come to paris, with a padlock engraved with our names and the date and lock it on to the bridge, as the many hundreds of thousands of people have done.

Hopefully rumours aren't true and that they either strengthen the bridge or create a location to do this in the future.

Just prior to our arrival in Paris I read that some of the bridge had collapsed (I assume just a section of the railing) from the weight of the locks. It's hard to imagine the whole bridge collapsing - they are extremely sturdy looking when see them from below on a boat cruise. It is worth a visit just to see the abundance of locks - locks attached to locks - locks curling over the railing - and humble hardware store locks mixed in among beautifully engraved locks, colored locks, and locks in the shape of hearts. Fear not if you have forgotten to bring a lock - there are entrepreneurs on the bridge who can sell you one on the spot. The day we were there, it was late afternoon and people were enjoying a lovely summer day and just sitting on the bridge having picnics and enjoying the sunshine. I will also say there was a rather inebriated group of young men who were amusing themselves by removing locks. They had a lock key and were testing it on locks and whenever they got one open they would laugh and cheer. Still, the overall experience is one of promise and devotion. You're bound to cross the Seine at some point in Paris, why not do it via the Lock Bridge?
