Le Progres is a great place for a coffee and croissant in the morning, a croque monsieur for lunch, or a late afternoon drink in the sun. You might recognize it as the set for one of the short films in "Paris Je T’Aime."

Inexplicably, they are closed on Sunday, one of the busiest days of the week on Rue de Bretangne.

The bar itself isn't bad, but the waiter was so cocky that our Parisian friends didn't even want to order. He commented on my French accent, then the fact we were ordering wind (I don't know why), and it just became worse with his every sentence. The bar was closed the 1st and the 2nd of November (Friday and Saturday).

Le progrès (I have no idea who added "The Bohemians Canteen" on this Trip Advisor page, it sounds a travel guide description but is definitely not part of the name of this bar) is a local institution. Artists and students meet each other here for lively conversations. Ideal for a chat with drinks and a bite, and if you're courageous to try and mingle with the locals, but don't come here with culinary expectations. I had good rillettes here, a decent if small steak and a good cheese platter with a decent wine (Brouilly) that was too expensive for what it offered. The waiters are a prime example of Parisian arrogance - they had a good view of the terrace standing very close to my table and made it a meeting place not giving a damn about me sitting there. Ah, Paris... During the day its much calmer, and they have very good coffee.
