I'm not a massive fan of Paris (sorry!) and the fact that it seems to be the easiest city in the world to book a bad hotel doesn't help. So when my girlfriend and I visited Paris to see a gig in February, I couldn't help but wonder if the relatively cheap and cheerful looking Hotel Monte Carlo was as promising as it looked. The answer? Yes.
It's small, and basic, but decent. The price was OK, the room was clean and pretty well decorated and the location was good (10 minutes walk from Gare Du Nord). A couple of small niggles were the fact that it was impossible for it not to be insanely hot at night and the complete lack of ventilation in the bathroom made for a damp experience. And the colour scheme is…adventurous. But you can see this from the website, so buyer beware on that one.
Is it the Four Seasons? No. But it is a reasonable place to stay? Yes.
