My doctor had recommended the palace but we had no idea how amazing and worthwhile this excursion would turn out. We took the train/subway, a nice ride to the country. I believe it was 30 minutes from the city. The palace is a few blocks from the station. Make sure you have your walking shoes on because this is extensive and massive. We went in November so there were no lines but I would recommend booking online in summer months, like everything else in Paris. We did tours on our own of the main palace and Marie's summer home and we walked all of it. I can't stress how big it truly is to get around. Do not underestimate this if you have mobility issues. There are bicycles and golf carts to rent to help get around. In the winter months the fountains are turned off.
My husband and I are hikers so we enjoyed the walks and savored the journey, even in the rain but the whole estate is WORTH IT. It is amazing, over the top elaborate, grand, beautiful, well kept, and stunning. The only manmade thing that we've seen that even compares, is the Vatican. It is hard getting every attraction in and around Paris but this one should go to the top of the list. The famous hall of mirrors, it is all truly fit for a king but you can see why he was beheaded!
