“Good, clean and cheep hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2014

I stayed in this hotel in November 2009. Liked the friendly staff, comfortable basic room location relatively close to the subway, reasonable price. In the showers and toilets were cleaned too well. Paying offered breakfast. Had the opportunity of free access to the internet, a could arrange to leave a bag at the reception (I left for 2 days in another city, liberated room).
Minus the hotel - no elevator. With a heavy suitcase up and down hard on the narrow Stairs (I lived on the 4rd floor)

If you're on a tight budget and are looking for somewhere in central Paris to essentially leave your luggage and have a shower, this place is for you! The location is great--it's close to many metro stations and I actually walked from the hotel to many landmarks like the Parthenon, Louvre, and Musee D'Orsay. It is also walking distance to Gare Austerlitz where trains can be caught for day trips south to the Loire Valley, if you're inerested. I was also out very early in the morning and late at night and the neighbourhood seemed quite safe. Next to location and price, I think that the big selling feature of this place is the staff. They were super friendly and very patient with my rather unimpressive french! :)

However... if you can afford to pay more than 65 EUR a night for a room and sleep is important to you at night, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. This is a hostel, and though you may have decided to pay extra to have a single room to yourself so that you can have more privacy and not be bothered by the comings and goings of room mates, you will be disappointed. There is absolutely no sound proofing whatsoever here. My room was next to the stairs, my bed a few feet in front of the door. The stairs are old and creaky, with a near constant stream of people stomping up and down them. Doors down the hallway were squeaky and slamming. People were talking in the hallways late into the night. On top of that the windows to the street may as well not exist for the noises from the street come right in (just as the damp coldness did). The hostel however, is thoughtful enough to include a fan and a heater in the room for you to use. As a light sleeper, I really did appreciate the fan. I had to sleep with the fan on, my ipod in, and had to start taking sleeping pills here--it is that noisy!

Some other downsides are that:
- you can hear water trickling in the pipes (which had me constantly double checking for leaks)
- the toilet looked like it had not been fully cleaned in quite some time (there was urine all over the lid and the outside of the bowl), so I had to clean it myself
- speaking of toilets, their toilet paper feels like printer paper!
- the bathroom(s) are incredibly small. I am 5'10" and my knees touched the wall!
- the room was incredibly tiny, the bed old, uncomfortable and small.
- on my first night a man appeared at my door early in the evening (I had not been forewarned) who did not appear to speak any english. Apparently he was there to hang curtains. Which he did standing with dirty shoes on the only chair in the room... I think this place may want to invest in a small step ladder!

Good points:
- location
- price
- friendly staff
- thoughtful add-ons like a fan and a heater in the room

Summary:
If you are trying to see Paris on a very limited budget and are willing to sacrifice quality sleep to do it, this seems like a safe bet for you! As a 30 year old professional I can say that I will not be back, but for those 18-22 year olds out there planning a backpacking adventure through Europe, I think that this is the place for you!

Room Tip: If possible it may be worth your while to request a room furthest from the stairs. Also, if you'...

Very clean and safe hotel for a cheap price..It was our first time in Paris so we had few questions and needed lil help and people working at the reception were awesome. Hotel is in the middle of Chinatown and very close to a few different tube stations and Place d'Italie where you can find loads od shops and restaurants. We came to Paris by car and got free parking and even the last day after check out we could use that parking for the rest of the day.It was a really good time, we will definatly go back.

Room Tip: We had double room with own shower and toilet and i think its very cheap and better. The only minus w...

The people at this hotel were awesome !!! Susanna and Paul went out of thier way to help my daughter and I. They helped us with getting our subway tickets to the airport. They showed us step by step what metro lines to take to the different sites of Paris. They named off different resturants to try.
THEY were EXCELLENT!! Breakfast was good too:)

This hotel is really cheap, yet safe and relatively clean. The area is quite charming and close to la Bibltiohèque Nationale and the EHESS. Everything you need in terms of shops and public transport is just a step outside. Breakfast is ok. There is quite a bit of traffic in the rue de Tolbiac, though, so bring your earplugs if you're a light sleeper. Also, I did worry about the fire escape, as there is only the central stairwell and no other means of escape. A bit worrisome when you're at the top floor. However, this is of course the case for almost all the affordable hotels in Paris, so it's not really a criticism of the Tolbiac as such.

It is my 3rd time at Tolbiac and this time my room was worst that the other 2 times.
Sleep quality still good for the price and location is perfect (near to the Chinese neighborhood and Place d'Italy with Metro line 7 and 6).
Reception was as always...charming and sweet!...but, my tiny bathroom was to renovate. The tiles sealant was little stained with mold. I believe this is easy to change and it gives a very bad impression even if the bathroom was quite clean as well as the room.
I will come back to this hotel but I wanted to point out this issue!
