We went to this restaurant because it has rave reviews on the food and because of its chef. The food was outstanding and it was worth it, the prices were reasonable. The service on the other hand was really bad. We waited for the food for an hour, and I am not sure why. The service was really bad . The waitress was so rude it was comical, the table next to us had it worse though, a man received a completely different meal than what he had asked for because they had run out of what he wanted, they neglected to let him know, and just expected him to eat it. If you have the patience and tolerance, it is worth going just for the food and the vibrant atmosphere.

I read about this in a NY times article- 'Snobfree guide to french dining'. And it was exactly that. Great food and great service. It was our first time in Paris- and that can be daunting when it comes to dining.

I have read a lot of reviews about rude service, but our exp was the opposite. The water helped us to understand and order. Each and every dish was awesome- so much that we went there again. On a cold day, they provide blankets also (as we experienced) and with the heaters, its great to sit outside.

As tourists, we could beat the queue by going at a bit odd hour, but i have seen huge lines of ppl waiting- that could be depressing.

In the food, the charcuterie platter was fantastic and the baby pork out of the world. Finally the hazelnut flavoured creme brulee was a great end to the experience.

How strange it was to read the NY Times sing the praises of Le Comptoir having just had a very ordinary and expensive dinner a few days earlier at this over-rated restaurant. From the brusque hostess who threw the silverware on the table to the mediocre food (an inedible dessert of rice pudding something like American diner fare and not as good) to the cramped tables to the tourists galore, this restaurant does not provide the charm and romance and exquisite fare one can find in Paris. My husband had a beef stew that was not much better than cafeteria fare. I had a tripe stew that was ok because I love tripe, but lacked the deliciousness of what that humble dish can be. A third member of our party, and a Parisian, was very disappointed having dined at another restaurant of the chef. She had the cod brandade, which should be a reliable choice of bistro fare, but it tasted like a deep-fried fritter. The escargots were fair. The bread was stale. Only the foie gras was superb and was accompanied by a delicious condiment. Try instead the Breizh Cafe for their unique, subtle and sophisticated crepes and lovely service or Ze Kitchen Galerie for an extraordinary (and very, very expensive meal, but with excellent service and extraordinarily delicate, refined food.) But don't waste your money to sit next to someone also looking for an "authentic" Paris that hardly exists and to eat food that does not deserve the name French. And, by the way, this was the only place in Paris where we confronted discourteous, unfriendly people. Paris is lovely, most French people are as gracious and dignified as Le Comptoir is not.

You will need to wait a little while to get in, but the service is great and the food is authentic and at a reasonable price. Enjoy the company of the others in line.

After michelin - chef Eyvind Hellstrom recommended this restaurant we thought this was a safe bet, but i get much better service at McDonalds! We waited for about 45 minutes at the street before we got a table. No information from the staff, just fully ignored has a guest. Since the menu is in french i asked polite if the senior waiter could explain some of the menu, something he could not. And this moment we should have left the restaurant, but i am very sorry that we did not. So we ended up with the set menu, which was average. When we got the main course i still had no red wine. I asked four times before one of the young waitresses took their time to give me a glass of wine. To the two senior waitresses, take some time off, go to a course where you can learn about handling people in a good and polite way, or find something else to do.

So my experience was really bad, but fortunately we visited Bouillon Racine the day after which complemented our really nice days in Paris.
