“Unimaginative and poor service, set pieces aside”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 December 2011

Although priced like a 2-3 star restaurant, this is really a sub-1 star restaurant with 2-star amuse-bouches. If you want or need to go off-menu, it all falls apart.

Starting with the good, the amuse-bouches were clearly well thought out - perhaps Gordon Ramsay supervised those himself to ensure that at least something would be done well. However, I wonder if GR has tried the rest of the cooking. It is very ordinary.

Worse still, we advised the restaurant weeks in advance that we were vegetarian. In London, being vegetarian typically means getting something of the same standard, thought and care as omnivorous diners (and Gordon Ramsay is no exception to this, notwithstanding his television personality). At the best restaurants, this will be something truly spectacular. At a 1-2 star restaurant it may involve a creative and interesting starter followed by, say, a fresh pasta dish with truffles or morels or something. We certainly would have been delighted with something like that on this occasion.

We were assured by the restaurant that this would be no problem at all and that they were very used to serving vegetarian dishes.

What did we get? A salad followed by an artichoke risotto. A salad!! Now, it was a pretty good salad. But a salad? With a few vegetables on the side? As a starter at a michelin-starred restaurant? What planet are these people on?

The sommelier, who was genuinely lovely and talented, was a bit better. Usually we prefer to drink red win when we are splashing out on an expensive dinner and usually the food is sufficiently flexible (onions, tomatoes, strong cheeses, mushrooms, pasta) to allow this. However green leaves with vinaigrette followed by artichokes doesn't really leave you with any choice but to to go for white wine.

Pre-dessert was excellent (another set piece) and dessert itself was perfectly good without blowing us away.

I have tried repeatedly to get in touch with Gordon Ramsay holdings to discuss this experience but have had no success at all. I really think that if a salad was what they had in mind, they might at least have suggested something a bit more interesting as an alternative or have made contact in the weeks before our visit to check.

Has the pomp of a Gordon Ramsay restaurant. It was just above average. Ok to try once.

“Gordon Ramsey restaurant at Trianon Palace, Versailles”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2011

One of the greatest meals of all time. Far superior to Alain Ducasse's Jules Verne at Eiffel Tower, for half the price. Chef was very responsive to my wife's weird eating habits-- no seafood, meats well done, no "cute" foods (lamb, rabbit etc. etc.). Outstanding wine list, very knowledgeable sommalier. Multiple amuses, very interesting tastes, everything explained in detail. OK so it is expensive, what in France isn't? Just go there. Book way in advance-- if unable to book, email the hotel and ask them to book for you-- they did and phoned us at our other hotel to tell us we were in. Real service. Memorable experience. If possible go on Saturday night and check out all the older men with their trophy dates.....

“Crowned our last night”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2011

What can I say, this restaurant did not get its Michelin stars for nothing. We had one of the tasting menus, and received one great taste after another, without forgetting traditional delicacies such as foie gras. Followed by raviolo of langoustines, oven roasted Allatoin lamb, Royal pigeon from Bresse, and mouth melting desserts. Did I get you hungry? Elaborate, different food experience, this place should be not missed when in Versailles. Addition to food, the restaurant offers a nice athmosphere and great service. We had a small incident while a dessert bowl fell in the floor, but as we told to the waiter, nothing really happened, after cleaning the glass there where no harm done, and he apologized with another yammy dessert dish. Do not miss this opportunity, if you are around.

“Excellent Food, Service and Ambience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2011

We booked too late for Dinner reservations but managed a lunch reservation. We both had the menu decouvete (125 euro per person). All of the courses were excellent. The timings between each course was perfect, the staff were professional and friendly and eating on the terrace was wonderful on such a warm day.
