Although priced like a 2-3 star restaurant, this is really a sub-1 star restaurant with 2-star amuse-bouches. If you want or need to go off-menu, it all falls apart.
Starting with the good, the amuse-bouches were clearly well thought out - perhaps Gordon Ramsay supervised those himself to ensure that at least something would be done well. However, I wonder if GR has tried the rest of the cooking. It is very ordinary.
Worse still, we advised the restaurant weeks in advance that we were vegetarian. In London, being vegetarian typically means getting something of the same standard, thought and care as omnivorous diners (and Gordon Ramsay is no exception to this, notwithstanding his television personality). At the best restaurants, this will be something truly spectacular. At a 1-2 star restaurant it may involve a creative and interesting starter followed by, say, a fresh pasta dish with truffles or morels or something. We certainly would have been delighted with something like that on this occasion.
We were assured by the restaurant that this would be no problem at all and that they were very used to serving vegetarian dishes.
What did we get? A salad followed by an artichoke risotto. A salad!! Now, it was a pretty good salad. But a salad? With a few vegetables on the side? As a starter at a michelin-starred restaurant? What planet are these people on?
The sommelier, who was genuinely lovely and talented, was a bit better. Usually we prefer to drink red win when we are splashing out on an expensive dinner and usually the food is sufficiently flexible (onions, tomatoes, strong cheeses, mushrooms, pasta) to allow this. However green leaves with vinaigrette followed by artichokes doesn't really leave you with any choice but to to go for white wine.
Pre-dessert was excellent (another set piece) and dessert itself was perfectly good without blowing us away.
I have tried repeatedly to get in touch with Gordon Ramsay holdings to discuss this experience but have had no success at all. I really think that if a salad was what they had in mind, they might at least have suggested something a bit more interesting as an alternative or have made contact in the weeks before our visit to check.
