A steakhouse that does not know what "steak doneness" means. Ordered duck skewers for lunch, asked for medium rare or medium they brought it rare; brought the dish to the owners attention after a second attempt to cook it without success; The owner did not seem to care and did not offer to discard the bill but asked for 10€ for that baked potato that came alongside, that I ate.

NOT RECOMMENDED.

“One of the best, and most economical meals in Versailles!”
Reviewed 20 June 2013

We happened on this restaurant at lunch time, which may be the secret. Their lunch special, 13.5 euros for a salad and dessert, or 12 euros for a main course and a dessert, looked tempting. My husband had "the beef", which was a tender steak with a magnificent Bearnaise sauce, frites with a separate sauce, and a green salad with a wonderful dressing. It filled a large plate. I had a salad of probably 5 ounces of buffalo mozzarella, half a pound of thin green beans, tomatoes, and basil and zucchini, all with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Almost too much to eat. But the dessert was too tempting and delicious not to finish.
We sat next door at dinner the next day, and noticed the plates were even larger. The "fixed price" meals for dinner were around 27 euros, and I'm sure worth the price if you can eat that much. If I were to go for dinner, I'd split a meal - they are magnificent, but you'd have to crawl home if you finished your meal.
One criticism: the awning either was very small, leaving most of the outdoor seating in bright (hot) sunlight, or it was just furled in that day. You probably want to sit inside if it's hot out.

“Highly Recommended Local Spot”
Reviewed 18 March 2013

What a treat that we stumbled onto this truly quaint, local spot! We traveled in on the train from Paris for a morning visit to Versailles. Hungry and cold around 1, we were following Fodor's recommendation by finding the small street of shops and restaurants, and picked this place at random. We were seated at a lovely table, and although our French was minimal and their English not any better, we managed to point and acquire one of the best meals of our trip. Of note is the fact this place revolves around a small brasserie in the back of the room, manned by a single guy who is rolling out beef tender, brochettes, and other grilled items. I ordered a veal in white sauce, which was fabulous. My companions got various brochettes (seafood, beef and chicken) and were all very satisfied. All dishes were accompanied by a side, mine being the roasted zucchini and mushrooms, themselves good enough for a meal. House wine was perfect and the meal a relative bargain for what we received. The place was packed with locals chowing down on elaborate 3 course meals. All in all, an excellent experience.

“Average restaurant.”
Reviewed 1 December 2012

We booked here after reading the glowing reviews ,but were disappointed actually. Unfortunately we were seated right next to the large grill which was stationed inside the dining area ,consequently it was very hot and we were subjected to the grill chef 's expertise-or lack of ,as he frequently dropped bits of food .The tables were very close together and and it all felt a bit cramped, but indeed ,it was very popular and soon filled up. I had the grilled prawns which were very succulent but the sauce that accompanied them was out of a jar,and rancid -ugh. We would try elsewhere if we returned to Versailles.

“Best place to dine in Versailles!”
Reviewed 27 November 2012

Chez Lazare is by far the best place to dine in Versailles! Together with Paris, Versailles remains so touristic, that often it is hard to find good, tasty, authentic french food. Chez Lazare serves finger-licking, tasty french food, charms with its cozy interiors and has menus in English (sometimes a trouble to find in France!). Just minutes away from the main train station, the restaurant rests among the string of others in 'downtown" Versailles on Rue de Satory. My husband and I first discovered the place last year through a recommendation of a local hotel small hotel owner, who named it to be the ultimate place to eat in Versailles. We ate there again this summer on a short getaway to Paris/Versailles.
It became my first place to ever try escargot - a person will either hate it or love it, depending on how it was cooked. So the first time to try it must be in a good place. I now love escargot!
Reasonably priced as for France. Water is served complimentary in big bottles that used to hold wine. I had Creme Brulee for desert and it was very good. The only wierd thing was popcorn served as an appetizer - but we encountered that in a number of french restaurants. Overall, very cozy atmosphere - recommend to anyone!
