This was just right for our stay to visit the medieval cite. The hotel is just down the road from it, away from the bustle but close by enough to make repeated visits. Unfortunately, although we'd booked well ahead, the room wasn't available on the first night which meant a tiny room for this night and then a move, which was an inconvenience. The girl on the desk was unsympathetic - it was the computer system that had done it and nothing to do with anyone there. All other staff were helpful at other times. Go for a larger room if you can.

The modern city is a 15 - 20 minute walk away with the usual shops for a town. They've managed to keep pedestrians away from cars, more or less, which is nice. The main square has a number of cafes with tables outside - very quiet on Sunday but lively at other times. The canal runs past the station, over the other side of town. Here, right by the station, you can book a cruise along the canal or hire a bicycle. We hired bikes - it gets busy, best to book ahead or be prepared to come back later - and cycled out for an hour and then turned back. Very pleasant, tranquil without bring dull as there are many boats passing and pretty countryside. Great view of the old cite, too, as you cycle back into town. It has the benefit of being shaded all along there, too. The locks are fun as several boats try to get through at once.

I'd recommend two nights here. We'd flown in to Toulouse, did one night there then travelled to Carcassonne by train - an hour on the train and very pleasant. This is something else that needs to be booked as, unlike the UK, you can't get on unless you have a seat booked. Cost was about 30 euros for two.

I shared a room with 2 other friends the room was compact but as on holiday we didn't spent much time in it. Sunbathing & seeing the Medieval City were priority ! The staff were very helpful, friendly & spoke very good English (especially Emilie & Stephanie) The sister hotel La Chateau is bigger more expensive but has a great pool & spa facilities as well as a lovely place to relax with drinks nibbles & a view of the Medieval City.

Small everything but comfortable and a stones throw to the castle. Pool was tiny but perfect for a quick cool down in the soaring heat. Helpful staff. Short taxi ride from the airport which worked out more reasonable than public transport.

First, don't get too impressed by the photos on the website and it's 'boutique-hotel' looks...It's only looks as the quality of the materials makes it more on the Ikea-ish side of a boutique. The room we had was very small as everyone seems to note. All this being said, this hotel was perfect for us for the location, the price, the parking, the friendly staff, the pool and the nice breakfast.

Room Tip: Try the ground floor as it has no elevator.

First impressions are a smart small boutique hotel, well located for walking to all parts of town. Rooms were very small, but clean, comfortable and air conditioned. The bar doubles up as a breakfast dining room in the morning and there's a small pool to unwind by - not somewhere for spending a day though. Staff were helpful, although it seems to be run on a shoestring with only one member of staff managing both reception, the bar, breakfast etc. and at night there's no-one around at reception or the bar. Car parking (which I suspect in season is a pain in Carcassone) was just over the road.

There are two other hotels near by that are part of the same group - you pass one on the way to the old city and from the outside it looked a better choice. For the price I expected something a little better.

It's a nice enough place and very close to the medieval city but the rooms are small for what you pay, and although amongst other things there's parking (at 10€ per day) and there's a small pool, the bar (and reception) closes at 20.30 so if you fancy a nightcap you will be disappointed!

Room Tip: Avoid rooms overlooking the main road

Hotel L'Octroi is conveniently located within walking distance of both the new and old cities of Carcassonne. I chose this hotel because of it's location and the availability of parking. I was a bit confused by construction at the rear entrance to the hotel and it took me a moment to find the reception desk which is on the other side of the building, along the main street. While it is not a large hotel, there seem to be a lot of stairs which I found challenging to navigate with a large, heavy suitcase. The rooms were small but comfortable. The bathrooms could use some updating. I did not have any challenges with the wifi. With a grocery store just a few doors down I was able to pick up snacks and some breakfast.
