“Basic hotel in a good location.”
Reviewed 22 October 2010

We spent one night at Hotel L'Octroi. Our triple room was very small, but clean. Each room is decorated in a different colour - orange, red, green - quite psychadelic really and a bit overhwelming in such a small space. The bed was very comfortable. The ac only seemd to blow hot air, but our window opened onto a small courtyard so was fairly quiet. The bathroom had a shower over the bath with a curtain around it and had good hot water.

One of the couples we travelled with said their room smelt very musty and when they opened their window they could smell strong cooking odours from somewhere nearby. Their cold water adjustment was not working (very unusual taps) so they could not shower as they only had hot water. The other couple had a double room next to ours and although small, it was fine.

There is no lift and the spiral staircase to the first and second floors was a bit challenging with heavy bags. The breakfast area next to reception is very basic, but all this was quite evident on the website so all was as expected.

We arrived early evening and when we looked out our window we saw the top of the old cite lit up like something from a fairy tale. We walked the two blocks there and had dinner, planning on going back the next morning before leaving to have a good look. Unfortunately it was pouring the next day so we weren't able to do so.

The girl on reception when we checked in was very nice and helpful. The girl on duty the next morning was less so.

I think this hotel is fine for a short stay, but due to the lack of space/storage in the room I could not cope for more than 2 nights.

Lovely little hotel. Staff very friendly and helpful. ideal location 2 minutes from Cite and about 10 mins from the town centre. This is a no smoking hotel, however people were using the non-smoking courtyard to have a cigarette which meant you couldn't open the bedroom window unless you wanted a room full of smoke. No other complaints. It's a super place to stay for a short break.

After a 20 minute walk from the station we arrived at the hotel and were a bit dubious about its location, all proven unfounded as it is just a five minute walk away from the Cite and on our return to the station we caught the bus from the Cite.
The room was clean and tidy with a decent bathroom with bath and overhead shower. The decor is sort of funky and each room is different. Decent TV (although the volume is set very low), comfy bed and aircon; best of all shutters on the windows to allow us a lie-in. Our room (78) looked over the courtyard.
Breakfast was offered at an extra ten euro, we declined.
The staff were friendly and let us leave our bags there after we booked out. To walk into the 'New' Town we used the old bridge rather than the new bridge, much more atmospheric.
All in all a decent enough two star hotel.

The Hotel is located near the Cite, and can be walked to in a matter of minutes. It is clean, has Airconditioning and a Television. It does not believe in stocking up on soaps, or toilet paper. We asked for toilet paper and were treated like we had just requested the Receptionist / waitress to put her hands up and give us the takings for the month. I asked the same staff member on checking out if it was ok! to leave my bags while we went shopping and would collect them on our return. This was greeted with a nod of the head and a small bite of the lower lip. She did however get up and walk to the room where I was allowed store my 2 cases with the others already located here. To say this staff member has a huge attitude problem and a Jekyl & Hyde personality is an understatement. ( She did explain later on my return to collect the cases that this was a traditional thing in France, she even explained that a shake of the head from left to right was to indicate a negative response. I have stayed in numerous hotels in france and further afield and have never been treated like this before.
The dining room is looking out onto the main street and is just off reception. The tables are very close together and resemble what you would expect to find at a childrens birthday party. I only stayed at this Hotel because the one I have stayed at on two previous visits was booked out. (Maison Sans Frontierre)

The hotel is conveniently situated, just outside the somewhat overated historic old town, which is spoilt by shops selling tat. Whilst all the rooms are not decorated the same, ours was painted brown/ chocolate, making it rather dark. Thr other rooms are probably painted in more inspiring colours, so I wouldn't let this put anyone of staying in this hotel.

Hotel was very close to the walled city and a 5-10 minute taxi ride from the station. It would take approx 20-25 mins to walk to the station. We were easily able to walk into the new city everyday. The people were friendly and the hotel had an eclectic, colorful modern feel. We did not eat at the hotel - there is a bakery across the street with a friendly owner. We were on the third floor - it was always very dark on the second floor and we had to feel around for the lights!
The square in the centre of town was great - we ate at Le Longchamp the first night - it was pretty good. The second night we ate at the Brasserie Le Donjon - in the walled city - the food (Cassoulet and lamb dish with figs) was amazing.

Good times-
*Absolutely brilliant location, ideal!
*Hotel was modern and clean throughout!
Bad times-
*Breakfast was sooooo slow, and it is served in a tiny room, you all are crammed in together and you have to share tables...so when one person wants to get up - you all have to get up! Only one girl serving everything! and she drops a lot of things! It stressed me out watching how stressed out she was!
* The rooms were so basic! It didn't have soap or a hairdryer - I had to go down 2 flights of stairs every morning with wet hair to ask to borrow the one hairdryer they have!! Very annoying!
Definitely not worth the money for the hotel, but is worth the money in terms of location!
So because of the location I would actually recommend the hotel, but just buy your breakfast elsewhere!
