I was disappointed with Hotel Astoria but I must partially blame myself. It was advertised as budget (yes – we paid €325 for 2 nights) and a 20 minute walk to La Cité (no – 30+ uphill) with free wi-fi (yes – in the lobby). I should have done a bit more research on Carcassonne and realized it was not the right hotel for us before booking. Although the owners were as nice as pie and were very helpful with sightseeing tips and directions, we thought we could have done better. The five of us (2 adults and 3 teens) had 2 bedrooms in the annex across a busy one-way street. The large air-conditioned triple was really a quad and had a tiny, but serviceable bathroom. The large double did not have air conditioning (sorry girls!) and was very hot at night. With the window open to get some relief, the noisy street was a nuisance and made sleeping difficult. It’s location in the New City near the train station and Le Jardin André Chénier was convenient for that, but we had a car and there are certainly better choices for drivers much closer or within La Cité – especially the hostel we visited while wandering the medieval streets. We paid for parking (€6/day) in the hotel’s really old garage since there was hardly any on-street parking, but that meant having a curfew as the garage had to be locked up by 8 pm, putting an artificial end on day trips. On our first morning, we had the decidedly non-budget, continental breakfast at the hotel for €8 pp. The following day, we got a better, cheaper breakfast at the café just a short stroll away.
