I had no expectations at all but was extremely pleased with my choice of accommodation. May and Richard were really welcoming, explained how to get about, gave me a map, nothing was too much trouble. The room was large and clean, the beds were fantastic. Excellent sheets meant that i slept very well and long (after all that walking!). Breakfast was traditional, pastries, bread, coffee (tea), juice at 9am - a very civilised time. The place was very central in the lower city, Le Citie only a 20 min stroll away.

We arrived at 8.30am after an overnight train trip and were pleasantly surprised to be able to check in, move into our room, and use the showers immediately. The owners were very friendly and helpful, providing a city map and showing us the location of supermarkets, laundromat, the best route to the medieval city, etc. They admitted we had been double booked, but had realised this before our arrival and had set up a downstairs room which is not usually used for guests, for us. The room was huge and the beds were clean (we got 2 singles instead of a double, but this happened to us frequently throughout Europe. One of the singles was a King single). The corners of the room were a bit dusty and their daughters' slippers were still under the chair! but this didn't bother us. It must have been well into the 30s (celsius) while we were there but the room was blissfully cool in the middle of the day, despite no air conditioning. The main downside was that it faced the road and incredibly noisy trucks started driving past from about 4am onwards, although the street does not appear to be a main thoroughfare. There were two bathrooms for guests and we never had to wait; the downstairs one was a little worn looking but it worked fine, the upstairs one was nice.
Breakfast was OK (criossants and bread and hot and cold drinks? I can't quite recall if there was anything else).
The location was excellent, a pleasant 15 min walk from the medieval city, and very close (5 minutes) to the train station, supermarkets, mcdonalds, etc.
Overall: friendly, could have been a little cleaner but not bad, great location and price (we booked over the internet and paid euro 58 per night for two)

Pretty basic rooms but in a great location, a couple of minutes walk from the station in the main town. There are plenty of bars and restaurants within a few minutes walk and the old Cite is easy enough to get to, probably about 15 minutes walk across the old bridge and up the hill. The old Cite seems to be where most of the nightlife action is. The restaurants there are mostly excellent with a lot of regional food and wine. The historical tours are definitely worth doing and there seem to be a lot of events scheduled during the tourist season.

I seemed to cope reasonably well with my broken French, as many of the bars and restaurants have English speakers. The tourist information centre is pretty good too and organises guided tours in English.

The weather was extremely hot when we were there, in the high 30s every day and no rain at all. The lack of air-con in the hotel rooms was the only thing to make the stay less comfortable. We tended to stay indoors during the afternoon, it was that hot. We went to a local beauty spot to chill out and do a bit of sunbathing, the Lac de le Cavayere. That was excellent, A massive lake with large supervised beaches and an adventure park on one of the banks. We saw a lot of families there.

The town is in easy reach of Toulouse and Perpignan. We spent a day in Toulouse via the TGV which only took about 45 mins and was pretty cheap. Toulouse is a place i would definitely want to visit again, the one day we spent there definitely wasn't long enough.

Carcasonne is a place i would definitely visit again and the Millett guesthouse is a place i would use again. the English couple who run it are very friendly and made our stay a lot easier.
