We stayed at the Hotel de la Cité midweek on the occasion of a drive from Southern Spain to Western France. We had booked online via Accor website a full suite with "far reaching view of the countryside and a canopy / four poster bed" The hotel had this iconic status since Orient Express relaunched it and it was always on our list of MUST PLACES to go in a lifetime. Unfortunately the hotel is now managed by Accor, which has made its reputation bu offering cheap and nasty accomodation around the globe for many years. Why they managed to get involved with a property like this is anyone's guess but there is a strong brand misfit which you can notice in the quality of the service. Upon check-in , we had to wait to be attended to although there were two receptionnists on duty and no one else was ahead of us. After check-in we were brought to our suite, which was located in the Villa opposite the hotel, which in itself was an exciting twist !! However the villa was surrounded on the left by a poorly kept garden (named Jardin de l'Eveque) which was part building site part junkyard and broken windows. At night the rather authentic looking outside light was not operating which saved the bad view on the junkyard but made it tricky ot open the door. Not impressed at all. The suite in itself was pleasant, well appointed, very quirky and had a good feel to it BUT there was no four poster nor canopy bed NOR there was a far reaching view of the countryside. Instead we had walled garden which in itself was rather pleasant but not what you want when a view has been promised to you. There was a view however over the adjacent cathedral but nothing to do with a far reaching countryside view. In any culture or language, what the hotel internet website is basically a lie as not ALL the suites of the hotel have canopy bed or far reaching countryside views as it is heavily implied in the marketing text. In the evening, we decided to had a cocktail in the magnificent hotel bar. When we arrived at 7.15pm, there was nobody in there (either customers or bartenders). After a 5 minutes wait, someone turned up in a foul mood as I had interrrupted their dinner break. I got my drink after a further 15 minutes. Not impressed. Better impression was the breakfast which was delightful and enjoyable. Check_out was a poor experience had we had to wait over 20 minutes as other customers were checking out at the same time. Overall a very average experience and we probably will not return.
