This hotel was fantastic. We had a beautiful room overlooking the wall and breakfast was included and fantastic, a full gourmet buffet. Dinner in the dining room was excellent.
The staff were immaculate and the service perfect. This was a wonderful experience and a totally wonderful experience.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay in a junior suite which had a balcony almost as big as the room and amazing view over the Castle and the town below. Staying at this hotel is like stepping back in time - I felt almost as if I was a guest at Downton Abbey.

The hotel were incredibly helpful before our arrival, giving advice on how to travel from the airport by train and arranging for a taxi to pick us up at the train station. Somehow we managed to get the wrong train and the hotel called us when we hadn't arrived as expected at the train station and then advised us on the revised time we would arrive and booked another taxi to collect us.

Our room was very nicely decorated - a huge big bed that was so comfortable it was like sleeping in a cloud. We were welcomed by a complimentary bottle of sparking wine and a box of chocolates which was a wonderful treat after we'd arrived later than expected.

The bathroom was fitted throughout with marble and had a wonderful shower and lots of gorgeous French toiletries which were refreshed daily. As I mentioned earlier the balcony of our room was huge with a table and chairs and two sun loungers on it. Unfortunately it rained most of the time we were there and so we didn't get to use it much but I can imagine in warmer weather it would be fabulous to sit out there and enjoy the view.

We didn't eat in the restaurant but breakfast was just wonderful - so many different things to choose from and all of such a good standard. The serving staff were so friendly and happy as well which made the whole experience a real pleasure. We took advantage of the library to enjoy a few drinks one afternoon and it is a lovely environment to relax in after being out in the cold.

The only thing that I could say would be a negative of the stay would be the sound proofing of the room. This is I'm sure due to the age of the building and made it feel more like staying at someone's house - I actually enjoyed hearing the sound of the piano being played below during the evening drifting up into our room but just wanted to flag it for any light sleepers who may want to ensure they take their ear plugs with them. The turn down service was at 18.30 each night as well which seemed a strange time as we were getting ready for dinner then and didn't really want to sit there whilst they prepared the room. We did take advantage of the lovely castle shaped chocolates they brought as part of the turn down though.

Anyway these are just very minor things and they didn't distract at all from our stay. I wish I was better able to articulate the beauty of this hotel and how special I felt staying here. If you get the opportunity to go then do - I would love to come back and stay again!

What a location and I doubt if you could find a more professionally run Hotel. Classic interior ,great superior room with a view and terrace to die for and excellent service. Check in was superb(despite error on our part) and misunderstanding with luggage was dealt with professionally and without fuss by the Manager.
Only adverse comment was that it was over heated in November although it was exceptional weather for the time of year.

Having spent 5 days cycling the Canal Garonne, I stopped in Carcassonne to meet up with a friend who was joining me for the remainder of my cycle to the Med. This hotel has accommodated many on the famous dignitaries such as Winston Churchill and Grace Kelly. We were accommodated in the annex which is just across from the hotel entrance and attention to detail was obvious. The room was spotlessly clean, the beds were most comfortable as were the pillows. There was a turndown service and the bathroom was spacious with quality toiletries on hand. The hotel has a club feel with comfortable leather seats in the lounge overlooking the immaculately manicured gardens which also overlooked the town,an ideal spot to have an aperitif before dinner in the Michelin starred restaurant famed for its cuisine. The breakfast was a buffet affair with an excellent selection of cold meats, cheeses, hot selection, pancakes, cereals, meuslis and fresh juices not forgetting the wide selection of breads, croissants and pastries. This is the perfect location for a family gathering or a romantic break. The staff were very professional, spoke perfect English and were most helpful.Carcassonne is a fascinating medieval city which tends to get thronged with tourists. There are lots of restaurants and bars and much to see.

Room Tip: Stay in the main hotel

My wife and I stayed 3 nights in October in a delightful medieval junior suite with a view overlooking the courtyard in front of the hotel and the beautiful basilica next the hotel. We could sometimes here the touring a cappella quartet that happened to be singing in the basilica while we were there -- quite sublime!

Our room was gorgeous, well appointed and quiet -- despite its location overlooking the public courtyard in front of the hotel.

The staff was friendly and helpful and also made the great suggestion to do the Canal du Midi wine trip that we thoroughly enjoyed. Breakfast is a feast and do not miss dinner in the Barbacane Restaurant.

beautiful location; we had a junior suite: impeccable! just in the middle of the medieval town; ; food, although a michelin restaurant, not always as it should be: always the same starters, very very limited choice (if you stay 5 days like we did, you tried everything in half board); nice wine list, not too expensive; service in the bar very mediocre; friendly personnel; but a big applaus for the lady at thbreakfast: she is worth gold!!!! breakfast very very good.

We had booked a family room online and from the photos it only showed one such room, a spacious room with a mezzanine floor for the 2 children. We also rang ahead to check that there was only one family room, so we would be sure of getting the room we liked. The car park people were very helpful to us but when we arrived at reception, the two ladies on duty were prioritising the constantly ringing phones and not the guests waiting to check in. (why don't they have a back office to deal with the calls and leave the receptionists to receive their guests?). When we were shown to our family room, we discovered a standard room with two extra beds, not the room we had thought we would get. At €315 we thought this was appalling, as the standard rooms were closer to €200. When my husband complained, they adjusted the price, but of course, the room we wanted (no311) was already occupied. We decided not to eat at the hotel, as we were a bit put off, so went out instead. The hot water took ages to come through the taps, but the bathroom was pleasant. Unfortunately, our room overlooked the Basilica, and we were woken up at 5.30am by the street cleaners, who came around 4 times, then the bin men arrived. A very disappointing stay, in a potentially wonderful hotel. Carcassonne is amazing, but make sure you know exactly where your room is situated and request a quiet room. We felt a bit duped when we were expecting a bit of luxury.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the garden side or overlooking castle walls, NOT streetside! Look at a plan of the...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for staying at Hotel de la Cité and for having taken the time to share your remarks with us.

It is with great regret we read that your stay was not to your expectations.

We were very concerned regarding your comments about your room allocation and apologise for it. Please note that all of our family rooms are individually decorated. Their size is between 30 to 35 square meters and can comfortably accommodate 2 adults & 2 children.

In order to avoid any confusion we have added more pictures for this room category.

We apologise as well for the wait at check in and took appropriate measure following your comments.

If ever you feel you might be up to giving us another chance, we'd be truly happy to welcome you back and let you have a more positive experience all round.

Yours sincerely
