“a lovely, friendly hotel in a prime location”
Reviewed 15 May 2009

This was a great place to visit the medieval village. You are at the footsteps of the castle within a 5 minute walk. I had a beautiful view of the castle from my room. The staff was very friendly and helpful with all of my requests. They gave me an early check-in and late check-out. The room was clean, a bit minimalist. The only thing is the backyard is under renovation. Since I was there on a weekend, I didn't get any construction but you could see the yard was torn up. Who cares? I had the lovely view of the castle. I highly recommend it.

booked this hotel after reading reviews on tripadvisor and glad we did. Hotel was nicely located withing 5 mins of cite and also 'new town' over the old bridge. Slight mixup in booking but soon put right with a phone call. Staff were friendly and always had a welcome not matter where you met them ( reception, bar, restaurant and corridors). Room was modern and clean as expected. small gripe - the air conditioning wasn't great. We were in room 36 and I imagine that previous to the new extension the view over the garden to the old cite was magnificent however there is now a 10 foot hoarding 10 foot from the window completely blocking the view at present. Hopefully when the renovations are completed next year this view will be restored to residents. As we didn't spend much time in the room it didn't bother us. Breakfast was superb with plenty of choice. Bar was pleasant and relaxing before heading out or coming back. The complementary glass of wine was served with olives/nuts etc and a nice little touch. I should add that our first experience of Carcassonne was a most unexpected and pleasant surprise This was the (public) airport bus shuttle to the city/cite. The driver took details of all the passengers hotels etc and when he arrived at various stops he pointed out the hotel and helped with the cases etc. Carcasonne is small and can easily be 'done' in a weekend. Would we go back to this hotel and Carcassonne ? - Definitely .

  • Liked — Excellent location. Very friendly staff ( exceptionally so )
  • Disliked — poor air conditioning ( it was october so no real problem)

The hotel is perfectly situated just outside the entrance to the walled city and less than a five minute walk. The hotel appears to have recently been renovated as our room decorations, furniture, and bathroom were all very modern, colorful and attractive. The front desk spoke perfect English and went out of their way to be helpful and offer advice. The breakfast buffet was our only experience in France where eggs and meats were included. I was expecting a basic chain hotel, but the Mercure was a very pleasant surprise.

We were visiting Carcassonne on business and chose the Mercure because it advertised on it's website an outdoor swimming pool.

When we arrived at the hotel and we were advised that the pool had been demolished to make space for extra bedrooms. The rear of the Hotel was a building site with lots of heavy plant and pile drivers operating from 8:00am to 6:00pm, so even relaxing out in the shade was out of the question.

The Hotel therefore was expensive for what was on offer, we were not given any reduction for the inconvenience, and to add insult to injury, they tried to double charge us for breakfast (an extra 52 euros), then, to top it all, they overcharged us against our quoted price, for the breakfasts we did take.

The room was small but clean and adequate. The restaurant was good but not cheap.

  • Liked — Clean accomodation. Good restaurant.
  • Disliked — The website is currently misleading, building works, no swimming pool, overcharging.

We booked this place based on TripAdvisor and Rick Steve's recommendations. After 2 nights in Paris in dubious, cramped accomodations, this place was wonderful. Very comfortable spacious rooms (ours were adjoining). Bathroom was best of whole trip. We had the buffet breakfast and the "menu" dinner. Food was well above average and price was excellent. Hotel is perfectly situated for visiting the Cite. Front desk was very helpful. Would definitely stay there again.

This is ten out of ten stuff.

And who would have thought that a Mercure could be so good.

The staff were great, the room - opening onto the garden - was small but perfectly formed, clean and comfortable as was the bathroom.

The food was super. In two weeks in France this place scored highest and was cheapest on that front.

Had a great couple of nights here. Just 300 metres from the the Cite it would have been brilliant at twice the price.

Why can't all hotels be like this?

I suppose if they were there would be no need for Tripadvisor.

We read some reviews of the hotel from this website and most were good. That said, the hotel surpassed our expectations. It's closer to la cité (the part that you want to visit, not that the rest of the town isn't nice) than you'd think - about 300m. The gardens are lovely and if you're luck enough, you might get one of the rooms that has a share of one of the two gardens. This was such as plus for us as we had a baby with us. The rooms are small, but nicely decorated. We stayed twice at the hotel and the second time we didn't have a garden but the ensuite was especially nice. Staff were very helpful, especially when we ran into some problems with Ryanair diversions. Breakfast was lovely, even if a little pricey. Evening dinners are excellent value, though I can't comment on them as we had a small child, so such grandeur wasn't possible this time. All in all, an excellent choice of hotel!
