“won't be going back”
Reviewed 8 September 2011

The location was ideal for the old city and within walking distance of the town centre. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and the food was adequate and fresh. Our main concerns relate to the rooms, which were very cramped and basic. Only OK if you intend to stay out all day but not very relaxing. The doors are very heavy and noisy when they close so we were woken several times a night with people coming and going.

The reception area was nicely furnished but the bedrooms aren't up to standard.

What a surprise to find an Ibis which falls below the good standards we have come to expect. Don't get me wrong your hosts are welcoming and friendly; however the room is small, the toilet/showerroom was cramped and the shower constantly leaked across the floor. The air conditioning worked!

Very disappointing Ibis Hotel, with small rooms, a shower room with a dirty plastic curtain and one receptionist with an amazingly off-hand concept of 'service'. Our room overlooked a derelict building, and a courtyard full of feral cats.
There's no restaurant, and we were directed to the old city - where the restaurants are over-priced tourist traps. We did eventually find an excellent restaurant in the 'new' town.
Limited parking in the secure hotel car park, otherwise it's a municipal car park.
Carpets were worn and grubby, and this hotel is clearly in need of modernisation throughout.

Carcassonne is split into two areas - on one side of the river is the new town, a bustling but generic area with supermarkets, McDonalds, the railway station, and the usual high street shops. On the other side of the river though is the reason you've come, the almost impossibly attractive old walled city of Carcassone, a citadel that protected the Cathars 800 years, crumbled into disrepair, and then was rejuvinated for the hordes of tourists who climb off their buses every morning.

The Ibis hotel straddles these two worlds perfectly, on the edge of the new town on the banks of the river. You can't quite see the walled city, but if you walk a minute out of the hotel you certainly can and if you walk for 15 minutes (uphill, but not too strenuous, you're in it). The hotel is on a quiet square, right by the bridge to take you to the good stuff, and given its location it's excellent value. Of course it's basic, but it's very clean, very comfortable, and the staff are friendly and will help you find anything that you don't have. Given that you're unlikely to spend too much time in your hotel (as well as the walled city, which is lovely but somewhat limited, there are many villages and towns a short hop away that are well worth exploring) this is a fine deal - you'll be paying a fortune for your cassoulet at restaurants, so you might as well save money somewhere!

Also - they have free internet in the lobby. Always a bonus, given the disgusting practice of "luxury" hotels charging a fortune for wifi access in their establishments.

A lovely hotel ideally situated between the old and new city. Rooms are on the small side and it can be quite noisy if the room is at the front, but they are very clean and comfortable. There is only public parking in the square at the front and it is underground. The old city is a joy to discover with many little streets inside the walls, the new city is excellent for shopping and eating as there are many fine bars and restaurants.
