I stayed in the Hotel Donjon Ramparts (part of the hotel that is seperate) from the main hotel The staff were superb and nothing was too much trouble but the little niggles in the room did not get sorted ( lighting not working etc). I got the impression that the staff were desperate to help in any way they could but were victims of the "procedures" of the place. Also at 120 euros a night I would have expected a little more than a tiny bar of complimentary soap in the bathroom- as the other hotels in the area offer a much wider selectin of complimentary toileteries

The room was spotless and the shower hot, bathroom clean etc but the downside was that if you slept with the window open, the noise from the party goers was non stop and enforced closed windows and noisy air conditioning.

Breakfast was 12 euros for a very good selection but we saw all the milk to be curdled and a few raised eyebrows at the price compared to the quality.

The mini bar charged 3euros 50 cents for a packet of crisps and all in all , if I were to weigh this hotel up. I would opt for the other hotels within 200 yards of the city walls for more value for money

This was our second visit with friends who wanted to experience the city from this lovely 'in character' hotel. By E-mail & phone i sorted us quiet, delux rooms in the main building Le Donjon and we were not dissappointed. Infact we were greeted with great enthusiasm about how wonderful our rooms were (19 -!st floor & 29-2nd ) and they were. Aircon was on!! And was very effective!! Both overlooked the front where directly across was an open first floor restaurant (closed at present as early in the season) and diagonally their own wine bar that has outside seating, expensive.- both would be noisier in season but with windows shut no problem. Pancake head rain shower an added bonus but if want a lower shower you have to 'twiddle' the slide controls on the left....but you can still get soaked so stand back at end!! lots of toiletries and by leaving a note for the maid I had extra milk left. In fact all the staff were friendly, at times very funny and wonderful, particularly those on reception.
Breakfast was lovely with lots of choice and scrambled egg and nice sausages as only hot choice but hey was great -fresh and although others said there was better choice elsewhere we didnt find anything to rush out of our lovely hotel for. Infact we disagree with lots of these comments bar the 'aircon not on yet' which we quizzed Bestwestern on.Result it was turned on or did they feel guilty with the heat.
Beautiful large green back garden with low lighting, ideal sun trap and for barmy evenings when back from our meals to finish the evening off. At the bottom is a very quiet area that has 4 suites in a separate building (2 others are inside) with patio table, chairs and sunbeds. My friend and I enjoyed a chat down here as the conference 'lot' had spilled outside due to nobody about & the heat. Also have 4 Privilage rooms which although smaller have added bonus of individual hedged patios with table & chairs which although I'd stayed in before could'nt risk rain & 4 of us inside in one room socialising.
Two restaurants stand out but dont know their names..as paid cash.1st has amazing live music each night (Basque guitarists) inside is a 'house that jack built' stuffed with memorabilia, food is cooked on an open fire and the manageress is a friendly scot. Chicken is lush! With your back to the Chateau gates go left 30yds and on left before the big wishing well you'll see their huge menu board. 2nd is recognised by stepping up into a walled garden that has 2 huge 'pollared' trees whose low branches fill the patio. 15e menu fantastic especially the chicken with mushroom & wine sauce and brill saute potatoes.
Love this ancient city and now 3rd visit just to walk between the walls twice a day. Staying within the walls is a must and so quiet this time of year, almost deserted by mid afternoon, mid week great choice. Main building a firm choice too. we walked up from the taxi as we knew the way but the hotel ran us back down.

Room Tip: If location is important ring & ask like i did

Hotel Donjon is a nice hotel in the middle of Carcassonne. Room Ok except very hot due to direct sun in afternoon and whole building seemed warm. Our room must have been 30C plus late afternoon. Staff refused to turn on aircon, manager puts cost saving above customer comfort. At night had to leave windows open which meant street noise and light flooded in. Breakfast OK but basic. Dinner at adjacent restaurant, owned by hotel, was excellent value.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms 3,4, 7,8 all face hot afternoon sun

I was only there for a night, but it was a very good choice to stay whithin the old city.
THe hotel is nice, it offers free wifi (you need to request a password at reception).
There is also free carpark. You can enquiry at reception and they will give you a map, Then once in the carpark you can call the hotel and a small van picks you up (and your luggage) and drops you off in front of the hotel.
Breakfast was really good, everything was fresh and good quality.
The room was very small, but I guess that's expected in such a tiny/old city.
Overall I enjoyed my stay there.
