Best Western Hotel Le Donjon
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 14 January 2012

I liked everything about this hotel except my room. I even liked the entrance to my room, which was in a kind of bungalow at the end of a grassy walk that had a burbling fountain. But the room was very motel-like and had no charm at all. The shower did not have a threshold, and the shampoo and soap were on wall dispensers. The hotel is divided into several sections and I believe I was in the worst of the bunch, due to it being the last available room. But, I did not snoop around any other rooms, so I am not positive they are less motel-like, but I presume they are from a conversation I had with reception. The hotel itself seemed old and full of character, and its location is spectacular, and I would definitlely stay here again, but in a different room-type.

We were a couple staying here over New Year and it was a fantastic stay. We stayed in room 4 in the main building, very clean and comfortable. The service was 5*, very friendly and accommodating. On 31DEC evening, all the guest were invited to some champagne and "nibbles" which we though was a very nice gesture, very generous. Overall, a fantastic stay, we would recommend this place to anybody looking for an unforgettable moment in the old city of Carcassonne.

Room Tip: We had a Deluxe room in the main building. It was fantastic!

The hotel is in a fabulous location right in the heart of the City. We were in a room in the annex, which means going outside to access it, but it is only about 50 yards away from the main building. The annex is not manned, which means there are key codes and security doors to go through.

The room itself was fine, as was the bathroom, if a little lacking in character.

My main beef is that we were arriving late in the evening - about 10pm, after the local restaurants had stopped serving - and were starving hungry. I assumed that the hotel, being part of a large chain, would have some sort of room service or evening food available but there was absolutely nothing - we could not even get a sandwich.

Breakfast was a bit chaotic - only one waitress on duty and she simply could not keep up with the numbers.

The hotel was very reasonably priced, but if it could just improve its service offering it would represent excellent value.

We stayed in this hotel for one night as part of our French traveling, and enjoyed it. It meant we could walk to the Michelin star restaurant in the evening and not worry about driving. We stayed in Room 1 od the main building, and the view of the (Disney-like) turrets was great. The city itself is a bit sterile compared to the dark realism of Agde, or the variety of Arles. But viewed from a distance - pow!

Staying smack in the heart of the medieval Cite was an excellent choice. Everything you can hope for is at hand's reach. Great location, great site to explore by walking around. A bit tight as far as room size goes, but understandable considering the location. Valet service to get to the car park (inbetween walls) - a big plus!

We stayed in Les Ramparts and despite other comments, this is just a two minute walk away from the main hotel and lovely and quiet. It was fantastic to walk out the front door and you are at the chateau walls - do visit and use the hand-held guides, very informative.

Our only negative is..... that a small pool in the courtyard garden to relax around would have been fabulous to end to our hot, sightseeing days.

Carcassone was beautiful but make a note that during the summer months it is very busy and you need to be sat down for dinner by 7.30pm otherwise it's a late dinner!
