“Sleepless in Carcassone”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 November 2013

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night on a recent trip to France. I was extremely disappointed in the room we were given = #11. It was in the annex building, about a 5 minute walk from the main hotel. Our room faced the street. The air conditioning was turned off, but it was a warm day so the only way to get some air in the room was to open the window. Until 5PM, we heard constant screams from a nearby "haunted house" The deliveries to the nearby restaurants began at 4AM so needless to say there was no sleep for us. The street cleaners came by multiple times during the early morning hours. The word Donjon means dungeon in English and that it was. The room itself was small but adequate. The main hotel appeared much nicer, and the breakfast was quite nice. There was a pleasant little bar in the hotel, but unfortunately no one at the front desk told us about it.

If I had it to do over, I would spend the extra money and stay at the Hotel de la Cite.

Room Tip: DO NOT accept a room in the annex overlooking the street unless you plan on a sleepless night

The hotel was ideally situated and our room was in the main building. The room was fairly small but well appointed and comfortable.
We didn't take any meals in the hotel as there are ample restaurants close by but we did always return to the hotel in the evening for a nightcap and this was very pleasant.
The Cite is very busy during the day but as other people have said, a quiet area to be in during the evenings.
The staff at the hotel were very helpful and courteous.
We would recommend this hotel if you're planning a trip to Carcassonne.

Impressive medieval historic Hotel on the outside, modern facilities on the inside..Hotel located over several sites within easy walking distance of the main hotel. Very scenic town inside castle walls provides many photo opportunities. Many restaurants and shops to choose from. Excellent breakfast in the main hotel area and helpful pleasant staff. Small cosy bar.

Room Tip: Sat Nav had trouble finding the location because the hotel is not accessible by car. You can park in...

This is your chance to stay in a castle! Located inside the ramparts of the old city, this location is so much fun. Best of all, you can enjoy strolling around at night after all the tour groups have left. Be sure to stroll outside the walls at night to look back and see the castle all lit up. The hotel has 3 different buildings. We stayed in the old one but features were upgraded enough to be comfortable. Rooms overlooked a nice garden/patio area with trees. Quiet and comfortable. Good beds and pillows. Bathroom small but decent. Lobby is warm and inviting to sit and recap your day. Staff was helpful and friendly enough, but didn't really go above and beyond. I'd stay here again and highly recommend it.

My wife tells me it was the most expensive place to stay out of our 5 locations, but I don't begrudge it a bit. Location is excellent, walk out the hotel and there you are...no grind up the hill to visit, no worries about getting back down in the dark. Also a nice garden area out back to escape to for a bottle of wine and a cigar.

We were in 9 and had a reasonable view into a neighboring restuarnts patio and a view of the towers. The room is accessed thru it's own stairway which keeps the noise down, but since there was a room above us, we still got some noise. Maid service around 3; something to note if you sometimes like a little rest before the evening. Very spacious, very clean. Had a plug for a 110 razor if you're into that sorta thing.

We sprung for the bigger breakfast one morning and felt it was worth the price, but we don't normally eat that much for breakfast so skipped the other days. Couldn't really figure out the express bfast at the bar. Suspect you go in, ring a bell and someone will bring you some coffee and some bread.

Room Tip: as always, cut back the noise by taking a top floor, cut back the stairs by taking a ground floor.

The walled city is fabulous, and the Hotel le Donjon was an excellent choice. Carcassonne is truly a fairy tale city. Arrived by train and found a cab just outside the station. We were aware that no vehicles are allowed in the city, but we were a bit unsure of leaving our bags outside the walls with a young man who said they would be shuttled to the hotel within a half hour. We were not ready to carry our bags up into the city so we took the chance. We found the hotel easily as per his directions and were pleasantly surprised with our room even though we were located in the annex building just a few steps from the lobby. Our room was quiet, private, spacious, and bright. The bathroom was also spacious, bright, and airy. Our stay was short, only 2 nights) but was perfect. There were lovely shops, restaurants, and the city itself was like stepping back in time. Viewing the walled city at night was magnificent. The medieval church was just that, medieval, as was evidenced by the statues and frescoes. This was a 2 night stay of our 18 day visit to France and was a bit out of the way but well worth it. Since my students in NJ have gone on several class trips to the Medieval Times in our state, I obviously sent them a postcard from Carcassonne and wrote, "Greetings from an authentic Medieval Times."

Room Tip: Was not disappointed with the annex room.

Carcasonne Review

It's a fascinating experience to stay in this wonderful citadel. The first challenge is that you park outside the city walls and are collected by a Porter with vehicle. This worked like clockwork from the clear emailed instructions, to the lady on the gate who ticked us off on her clip board and organised the porter for us both of whom were pleasant and helpful. We had brought our two little dogs and were given a garden room which was ideal, as well as a blanket each for them. It was elegant and comfortable and had tea/coffee making facilities which is unusual in Europe. Our dogs were welcome in all parts of the hotel. The hotel is beautifully situated to explore Carcassonne and is in a wonderful medieval building. Only slight negatives were the bath one stands in to have a shower was made of very thin plastic and moved about alarmingly as you showered. Breakfast was self service, nothing left to speak of, not even coffee. The bread was very nice though and in fairness we weren't charged. Highly recommend.
