Best Western Hotel Le Donjon

The desk clerk was very helpful as we were checking in, and she provided some good options for dinner (critical as we were visiting during the low season and many were closed). The hotel was very nice--great atmosphere and architecture in the public rooms, and our private rooms were very luxurious as well. Breakfast the next morning was delicious as well. All in all a wonderful stay.

The hotel and location are terrific. Do not attempt to dine at the affiliated restaurant unless you are a French national. Tourists come second in service and food quality. There are many fine restaurant choices in La Cite; Restaurant Le Donjon just is not one of them.

We stayed one night and put in the coordinates given on the hotel's website for the hotel guest parking lot. The GPS took us directly there and the hotel driver arrived within minutes to pick us up. As I recently injured my knee and was trying to minimize walking, I requested to stay in the main building (apparently there are 3 buildings, one being some distance away). We were given the lovely Room 6 in the main building which overlooked the front street and the ramparts of Carcassonne. Very comfortable room! Only downside was the shower didn't work. Both the bath tub and sink faucets had excellent water pressure; however, the shower was a mere dribble so I think there was a blockage. The location was fantastic and mere steps from the Castle (self-guided audio tour). We asked the receptionist about a restaurant called La Marquiere (well reviewed) and she informed us that many restaurants were closed on Sunday and gave us the name of 2 other restaurants close by. However, I recalled reading another review (thank you Trip Advisor) stating the restaurant's closing days were mid-week so I called and yes, they were open on Sunday. Thank heavens we called, otherwise we would've missed one of the best meals on this trip! Other than that, the staff was very welcoming. Breakfast was fine and convenient for the 13.50E charge: eggs, sausage, 2 cold cuts (sausage and turkey), 3 cheeses, fruit salad, cereal, yogurt, bread, croissants, and basic beverages. As check-out was at noon and we only stayed one night, the hotel stored our bags until we were ready to leave mid-afternoon. I thought one day was more than adequate to stay in Carcassonne. Would definitely stay at this hotel again due to its superb location.

1:No Sunday dinner service at hotel restaurant, but OK Monday breakfast.
2:Hotel introduces a near restaurant "Le Four St.Louis" which is 3-5min.
walk from hotel, just reverse side of hotel entrance is opening only one
among several restaurants in the chateau.
3:From the staion of Carcassonne it takes for 10 min by taxi (18.50 euro).
Taxi area is apart from staion front, though you can find easily 100meter
(110yard) ahead by tourism office(closed on Sunday).
Taxi stops at chateau parking area, and then hotel staff picks us up.
Hotel keeps check-in time strictly,so you can visit a real chateau by 3-5
min walk .
4:TV:BBC,CNN
5:New city down town(business district) is 30 min walk, however almost not
open on Sunday. When you come back chateau around 5p.m,you can
enjoy chateau wall which is lighted up.
6:Hotel staff was terribly kind.

Caught the shuttle bus from right outside the airport which took us to just outside le Cite. Bus driver was helpful and friendly and asked all the passengers which hotel they were starying at so he knew where to take them. We walked to the hotel through the Cite - which with a suitcase and hand luggage was a bit of a trek - it isn't a long walk, but it is through quite steep, narrow, cobbled streets packed with tourists. When we arrived at the hotel our room wasn't ready so they looked after our luggage and told us to go back in a couple of hours. Because the hotel is in the centre of the Cite this is no problem at all, so we left the hotel and went outside to explore.

We wandered around and managed to find a sunny spot to have a leisurely lunch, and then sat in the sun listening to street performers singing - the whole place is so magical it seems an understatement to call them buskers! There was a lot of music to be heard all around the Cite - from buskers around every corner to open air concerts in the evening.

When we returned to the hotel our room was still not ready - but we were on holiday, and the staff were very busy, so it wasn't an issue for us. We were slightly disappointed to be staying in the Remparts rather than the main hotel, but as we were only planning on sleeping in the room it wasn't a big deal. Our annexe was very charming actually with a delightful library and a pretty old stone staircase. The room was quite plain, but the air conditioning was very effective, and the bed and pillows were the most comfortable I have slept on in a long time - what more do you really need? We didn't spend much time in the main hotel, but there is a secluded walled garden that you can relax in, and even though it is in the middle of the bustling Cite it feels like it is miles away.

In the evenings there are plenty of bars and restaurants to spend time in, and as the evening goes on the majority of the visitors go home. We walked around the city walls quite late in the evening, and it was a magical experience.

We spent one day down in the town - there are large squares with cafes and bars, and again a lot of entertainment to listen to, and although there are hundreds of tourists from all over the world the whole area still feels very French, rather than commercialised for tourists, and it feels as if you have been let in on a secret. The walk back up to the Cite is quite steep, but the views as you approach take your breath away far more than the climb. Carcassonne is a truly magical place to visit and I would recommend it to anyone.

Sorry, I digress - back to the hotel. The staff were so very welcoming and couldn't have been more patient and helpful. Their English is very good, despite them saying they only speak it a little. My French is quite basic, but I made the effort to check-in in French which they seemed to appreciate. I had heard before going that English wasn't widely spoken in Carcassonne and had read that people could be a little rude - I have to say though that everyone we spoke to - in stilted French - was genuinely lovely and we were made to feel very welcome. I hadn't been to France for a long time, but now I can't wait to go back.

Took daughter for a special trip to Carcassonne in May 2013. Really wanted to stay in the Hotel de la Cite but it was fully booked.

Le Donjon was an excellent second best. In the Old Town, with good service and nice enough rooms.

We both loved Carcassonne and found plenty to do and some fabulous restaurants within the walls of the Old Town.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the beautiful gardens.

I stayed here recently for one night with my daughter. We shared a twin room which was very comfortable, it overlooked a nice courtyard garden. The staff were friendly and efficient. It was mid winter and rainy, so very quiet, when we went for breakfast we were the only ones there!
There is free parking for the hotel just a five minute walk away or I believe you can use their secure hotel parking for a fee.
This is a comfortable hotel right in the middle of the cite and was very convenient for a short stay.
