Le Donjon is a beautiful hotel within the city walls of Carcassonne. Parking is just outside the walls, and the hotel car comes to collect you and your luggage, and returns you to your car when you leave. We chose to walk to the hotel from the car park, and our luggage was waiting in our room when we arrived. Our room was excellent. Spacious and clean, we had a room with kingsize bed, plus an ante-room with day bed for our daughter. The large bathroom was lovely and spotlessly clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good, plenty of choice and could be eaten either indoors or in the garden. The only downside was that there were a lot of youths in the nearby square at night (not causing trouble, just loud). A beautiful hotel, and the car ride through the narrow streets is an experience in itself.

This was our second visit to this hotel, but we were aware of failings that not been apparent three years ago when we last stayed here.
Our so-called "superior" room (No. 25) in the main building was on the small side, with no view except a brick wall. Unusually for a hotel in an exceptionally interesting and historic town, there was no literature on Carcassonne in the bedroom, and very little in the lounge either.
In the bathroom, there were no toiletries apart from soap, and a bottle of bath gel fixed to the wall over the bath. Best Western usually supplies a range of other useful items. The bath itself was a 3/4 length one - fine as long as you're not over 5ft tall. The separate toilet had obviously been partitioned at some stage; the inward opening door rendered use of the toilet itself almost impossible except for very slim contortionists.
The tea/coffee making facilities were rudimentary and insufficient.
Finally, there was an intrusive continuous high pitched whine, apparently from the air extraction system, which disturbed our sleep.
On the plus side, this hotel is splendidly located, and has an excellent brasserie restaurant just across the tiny street. The buffet breakfast in the hotel is adequate, but at 11 Euros might be considered a little pricey for what is really only an enhanced continental breakfast.
All in all, an indifferent experience, and at around 100 euros per night, it is evident that Le Donjon is on a cost cutting exercise at the expense of its guests.

Just back from a four night stay at Le Donjon les Remparts in Carcassonne. This is a wonderful "olde worlde" period hotel bang in the center of the medieval La Cite de Carcassonne. Staff were friendly, informative and courteous throughout. Rooms were spacious, comfortably decorated/equipped and immaculately clean. I was in the main disappointed with the standard of local restaurants - if you don'l like duck and sausage cassoulet you could be in trouble!!! In general Carcassone well worth a short visit and "Le Donjon" is the place to stay...

Our stay in Carcasonne's Medieval City was quite a good one, however I was disappointed at the standard Best Western showed in many aspects of the trip.

I'll do the good then the bad.

Firstly, it was a very novel experience being able to stay in a castle (our family joked about getting the whole thing), but the novelty wore off overnight.
Secondly, the staff, however bad the room, were very helpful. We had room service, and the food showed up quickly.

However, when we arrived in our room, (we had two to a room, and two beds per room, for any doubts about how many belong) it was unbelieveably small. We thought that there must be a side room, but we were wrong. Adding our suitcases into the mix, we had just enough foot space to swing a cat.

Also, I'd like to caution that the tap water is NOT SAFE TO DRINK. Our entire family was caught ill with some form of drink poisoning- in which anything we ate or drank for several days ended up with us throwing it up or releasing it in other ways (add wince here).

They also added, as an incentive, high speed Wi-Fi access! However... the price was very high, topping the internet cafes around the area.

This was not a one-off experience- I visited Melbourne (Australia) for a school competition, and I was given a camp stretcher.
Overall, I didn't really enjoy the stay.

  • Liked — The service the staff offered us.
  • Disliked — The size of the apartment, and the fact that they provided cups to drink from with unsafe water.

We visited this hotel in December 2008. It was right inside the old city. The hotel was excellent. As previous guests have commented the rooms are a little on the small side but beautifully in keeping with the situation. The rooms were very warm in winter and the decorations very pleasant. The breakfasts were very good and there was plenty of choice, including boiled eggs with an eight egg boiler on the side or you could order an omelette.

We arrived on the shuttle bus from the airport which dropped us at the main city gates so we had a bit of a walk to our hotel. Whereas, on departure we had a taxi which cost 5 euro more in total and it picked us up from the hotel door.

The bus service from the old city into the Bastide is about once an hour so get bus times early on if this is your mode of transport. Alternatively walk into the new town but remember to go out the back gate of the old town - it is quicker.

There are some excellent restaurants within the old city and would recommend Le Saint-Jean and Le Plo, both near to the hotel.

My friend and I stayed for a few days in September 2007 and all I can say is I would highly recommend this jewel in Best Western's Crown. Not only were the staff very proficient in english but encourage you to speak french to them which I enjoyed,

We ate in their restaurant and I can recommend everything including Cassoluet (hope I've spelt it correctly), and wines of the region are superb. Eating out in this region is very reasonable.

Rooms were spotless and cleaned daily - I could not fault one aspect of our trip.
