Hotel Soleil Terminus
Ranked #23 of 39 Hotels in Carcassonne Center
Reviewed 9 September 2011

We took an extra day and went to Carcassone while in FrAnce. The Terminus Soleil is close to the train station, felt safe, had a bathtub, and it was air-conditioned, for a fair price. It certainly delivered for us.

I arrived with friends at this establishment after a very long drive from Venice... and as one of our party was ‘disabled’ we needed an establishment that could get us in quick and smoothly...

(No such luck at all, despite being close to Lourdes).... so much for divine intervention?

First off, they knew nothing of our reservation... despite our party leader having paid in full up-front to Lastminute.com – fortunately as she had the paperwork/receipts to prove this - they had no choice but to let us stay... and find us two rooms.

(But the pre-parking reserved was naturally wavered)

This hotel is classed as three star – it isn’t by any stretch of the imagination – the bathrooms hadn’t been updated since the 1960s, and the Wi-Fi at €5 for 1hr was utterly useless... so I did at least get a full refund for that....

Then we had the brassiere debacle, I ordered an entrecote steak – the measly meat presented was full of gristle, was luke warm and not sliceable at all with the standard naff cutlery provided - the rice and frits were cold too, this wasn’t a meal fit for a dog. It was so appalling in fact, and despite being very tired and hungry I had no choice but to ask the waiter to dispose of it post-haste...

(But at least they then had the courtesy to not charge us for any of that evening’s meals at all)

Now back to the room, it was twin single beds which for a normal adult were too small... the socket wiring also was blown out 2 of 4, which makes me think that safety standards are very lax?

Finally the breakfast, this was ok quality wise, bar the fact that it was staff wise galloping-chaos!! No coffee cups were present at all for over 20mins and no fruit juice available for an age either.... they were complete overwhelmed....and unable to deal with the guest numbers present...

Then as we had to collectively check out by 10:00am it meant that there was no practical time left to have any satisfying stress relieving shower at all.... and I couldn’t anyway as the fitting was only a foot or so above the bath as such.... and no I’m not a pygmy!!

So if you’re a sado-masochist I guess it’s a must do venue... but if you’re a seasoned business traveller... quickly move on by and defo avoid...

Old rooms, old furniture, no sound isolation between rooms, the worst breakfast room I have ever been, extremely small beds, I thought I would fell over when trying to move on the bed. The hotel pool and sauna is a joke. They ask you to get an access code by the reception to enter the pool which is open only between 09:00-12:00 and 16:00-19:00. For the sauna you need to make a time reservation at the reception! The hotel has no parking and they do not even help you to find a parking place around. One of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had.

I stayed at this hotel as part of an organised tour. As others have mentioned it is a distance from the walled city, but is well located within the modern part of Carcassonne (and my room had a great view to the walled city itself). The grand entrance and high-stud ceilings lent character and grandness to the place, but travellers should be aware it is still fairly budget (3-star) accommodation. For our large group, the one very small, very slow, lift presented a problem (many of us opting to haul our luggage up the staircase). Additionally, the furnishings are a little worn, and there were a few minor problems experienced within our group (keys not working, a leaking pipe in one bathroom). Staff attended to issues efficiently. Our group had a buffet dinner and breakfast in the hotel restaurant, and although neither was outstanding, they both offered a good selection.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the walled city (but bear in mind these may also have some increased street no...

Our stay was for only one night and whilst our room was not perfect it was comfortable and clean and the building, especially the staircase was to be admired. Although the fabric of the hotel had lost some of its original splendour we have only praise for the staff, particularly the manager. The manager helped us overcome a number of problems we had when hard copy of the information posted from our travel company about a cycling trip we were about to do went awry. He went out of his way to colour print the maps, directions and vouchers emailed (to his personal computer) as a replacement and to answer (in English) any questions we had.

We booked this hotel thinking it was a very short walk to the old city, but it is actually about a 25 minute walk. If you want to stay near the train station, then this is a location. The hotel is a bit rundown. It has a grand staircase, but that is about all. The room was clean but uncomfortable as the air did not work, the bed was creaky, and the pillows were hard. Staff was not helpful and breakfast was overpriced. We would not recommend this hotel to friends.

Grand entrance hall, followed by a typically european standard room although we were lucky and had a top floor room which had views towards the medieval city.
Clean enough , showerroom ok, didnt eat there as we were warned off.
Close and easy to the train station(100 yards) ,next time would maybe stay in the medieval part of Carcassonne for the atmosphere.
Beware the coach parties of Japanese!!!
