“Last-Minute Surprise”
Reviewed 16 August 2013

Not having planned for all lodging arrangements prior to arriving in Carcassonne, my family and I had a successfull last-minute ditch effort to find a respectable hotel. We we received a warm and friendly welcome at Hotel des Trois Couronnes! The only room available was the junior suite, and we recevied a nice discount since we arrived so late in the day. The room was beautiful with wall-to-wall and floor-to-celiing sliding doors overlooking the river and the massive fortress. The furnishings were nice, and the room and bathroom was very spacious. All amenities were updated and modern. The staff was very accommodating to our needs traveling with a toddler. We were disappointed our journey didn't have us staying at this hotel longer.

Got a great price for this hotel as hotels in the Cité are very expensive. Provided you are able-bodied, this hotel is a wonderful alternative. When you cross the Pont Vieux this is the very first building you come to so it makes a great base from which to explore both sides of the River Aude.

I said 'able-bodied' as it is a real hike to get up to the old Cité. Taxis cannot go inside the walls so be prepared to step it out. Bring a bottle of water........I am in training for the Dublin marathon and I was running out of steam on the way up!!

Be sure to bring your printed confirmation for your stay. The receptionist tried to persuade us that we were on a room only basis and would only accept that we had paid for breakfast when I produced my confirmation sheet (but even then she wasn't 100% convinced!) A comment was also passed about our room rate at check-out also.

Our room was tiny!! You could barely turn around, but it was spotlessly clean and served our needs. The beds were also tiny, the single bed was like a stretcher, I almost fell out when I went tried to turn over. I am not a big person, if you are then you may need to upgrade......I am not joking. The smallest bed I have ever slept in.This is such a beautiful city you will not be spending too much time in the room.

There was NOT a safe in the room.

The foyer downstairs was really lovely, a nice relaxing place to sit, with complimentary tea and coffee available all day.

The restaurant is on the 4th floor with AMAZING views of the Cité.........truly a fairytale. Breakfast was served here each morning, dinner also at night, but we never ate there. We were told that it was also the bar but it closes once the last diners leave so we could not get a drink there any night.

Breakfast was really fabulous for such a simple hotel.......a fantastic selection of everything. The fresh fruit was so nice, not tinned like a lot of hotels. The girls here were so pleasant and helpful, a great start to the day.

Be sure to allow time to explore the Bastide and go on a Canal du Midi trip, this hotel is great because you are slap bang between both sides of the city. Go and enjoy it!

Room Tip: Perhaps upgrade if you can. The basic rooms really are basic

This hotel is on the corner of 2 streets and is near the river with a spectacular view of La Cite, and the Bastide. We had a panoramic room and had a great view especially at night. Most everything is within walking distance.
The rooms are not massive and do have small spaces for storage. But they are clean, modern and, otherwise, well equipped for whatever you need.
The restaurant/bar is nice but small. You have to have a reservation to have dinner there because of the space. There was an English speaking staff member on most of the time and the staff overall were very helpful, and polite. The lounge area has complimentary coffee , internet access and vending machines. There is also a small but refreshing indoor pool and sliding doors and a great view of the walled in city.
I would recommend this place to stay if in Carcassone.

Room Tip: Ask for the Panoramic View rooms

This hotel is perfectly situated. By the river with a special view of La Cite, and the Bastide and modern cities to the rear, within 5 minutes you can be at any of these locations, and if you ask for a panoramic room you will get a small balcony with one of the best views anywhere.
The rooms are not massive and do have a major lack of storage and drawers, but are spotless, modern and, otherwise, well equipped - perfect for a short break.
The restaurant/bar is compact but again has the panoramic view, and breakfasts are excellent, and we did notice a seperate larger room used by coach parties. Staff speak excellent english and are very helpful, and reception has a nice lounge area with complimentary coffee , internet access and vending machines. There is also a nice indoor pool and sliding doors to be opened in very hot weather.
All in all, a wonderful venue.

Very clean and a superb balcony view of the old city. Staff all very polite and the room was excellent. Breakfast very good with plenty of choice. Underground car park not too bad at 9€ a night. Perfectly good free car park above it but with a soft top car we weren't going to risk it!

If you walk only a little further up towards the citie you will find better hotels at a similar price. We stayed for 3 nights in one of their best rooms. The view was spectacular but the balcony so small two could hardly sit out in comfort. Breakfast could not be taken as the hotel was full of Italian coach parties. We were awoken each morning at 7am by coaches revving up as they were all parked right in front of the hotel. No tea or coffee making facilities were available in the room and no where in the hotel could one get such drinks other than when the restaurant was open for a short time in the evening. The fridge in the room was not working and the bathroom so badly configured the bath could not be used and also not enough room to even sit easily on the loo! We received a 6am ealy alarm call from Reception on one morning even though we had not booked one. Housekeeping was not particularly helpful as we specifically asked one day for our room to be valeted early. We returned after 6 hours to find it in the same state. Nice place to visit for a weekend but I suggest you find somewhere else to stay rather than at this hotel.

Short version; beautiful hotel, in the perfect location for exploring both la Cité and the new town. Handy for transport links, near many lovely little eateries and with a breathtaking view.

We spent 5 nights at this hotel at the end of June, and from the beginning we experienced nothing but excellent, friendly service. A mistake with our booking caused a bit of a hiccup at arrival. We were offered a room for 2 nights which we would have had to pay for, then the lady on reception said she would check with other hotels in the town to make sure we had accomodation, which was far above and beyond what we expected. The hiccup was resolved promptly and we were able to keep the superior room we had been given for the remainder of the trip!

The room was compact but decorated in a calm, contemporary style. Very comfortable, with a lovely balcony offering a panoramic view of La Cité. There are shutters which block out the early morning sun if needed, and a selection of pillows and blankets. We had breakfast included and were very pleased with the selction each morning, and by the really friendly and attentive service from the ladies who looked after the diners.

All in all, an excellent hotel. Would recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: Superior rooms have an amazing view.
