“Lovely hotel in a fantastic location.”
Reviewed 12 July 2012 via mobile

This is a great hotel. It feels more like a 4* than a 2* because you get to use the Chateau Hotel's facilities just across the road, such as pool etc. in fact the two hotels share the same reception. Really nice bathrooms. The design is strong and not necessarily restful, which is why we've given 4 1/2 rather 5*. Given the location prices are ok too and the bar is reasonable. Enjoy.

You probably want to go to Carcassonne to see the walled Cite. You cannot beat this hotel for literally sitting under the walled cite, yet quiet at night (unlike places inside the walls). Room was large enough, bed was comfortable, AC worked well and it was clean. This may have been one of the places where you need the key card in a holder to keep lights and things working (stayed so many places we cannot remember, but that may be why another person had trouble with the lights - all was fine for us).

Breakfast food consists of locally sourced cheeses, jams, yogurts with some coffee, juice, and pastry basket. I really don't understand why you would want more than this. The local ingredients were delicious. The service comes across not exactly unfriendly but not really welcoming either. Definitely efficient and that is something we appreciate. They also don't seem to mind speaking english. They give you a combination to get in and out of the main building and the hotel. So you end up needing to enter that repeatedly and crossing the street a lot, with sets of stairs each time. This wasn't an issue for us, but keep it in mind if you have a lot of luggage.

Room Tip: Try to get a lower floor so you don't have to deal with many sets of stairs and luggage.

Brilliant location beside the medieval city with a nice pool area and bar. Rooms were very pleasant, but there were a couple of issues: (1) there are no coffee / tea making facilities in the room (2) there is no mini bar / fridge in the room (3) the lights in the room are on a 2 minute timer, which is really annoying. However, overall would highly recommend it.

Just across the road from Le Chateau hotel with which it shares facilities and very close to the old Cite. Junior suite had a pleasant terrace although the room with a third bed was a bit cramped. Bathroom was well equipped but as so often storage for wash bags was limited.
Booking in at Le chateau was easy with English speaking staff and parking was available at a price. Pleasant evening bar with views of the ramparts.
Did not take breakfast or use the pool.
A very pleasant spot.

I chose the Montmorency for its close proximity to the walled city, and nothing beats waking up to see those walls looming above you! Our room was comfortable, its terrace was lovely, and I appreciated the secure parking lot. On the down side, breakfast was overpriced and the service was quite "cool". (We spent three weeks in France, staying at several different hotels, and this was the only one where I did not feel warmly welcomed.).

Room Tip: The junior suites have excellent views and lovely patios.

Although the rooms are small they are quite and comfortable. The bed is comfortable & breakfast was nice. A perfect stop off for carcassone.

A very positive 5 day break. Some reviewers seem surprised that you have to check in across the street - all I can say is that is all clear on the website and I found it no big deal at all. Basically Montmorency is the 2 star hotel which shares facilities with its sister across the road, Hotel du Chateau (3 star). It gives you access to things you wouldn't typically get from a 2 star place, and if you pay a little more per night for that, well there it is. And of course, there's the location - more on that below.

Montmorency itself IS a 2 star hotel, so not awash with luxuries itself, though it's all had a funky facelift in the last few years. My room was pretty, the tv had plenty of channels, the aircon was excellent, the bathroom a good size. Outside I had a little terrace, from which I could see the battlements of La Cite (though I was along the side of the building, if you really want a great view ask for a room at the end of the building that looks right at it - it's a stunning view. There are 6 rooms there, 3 ground floor (best), and 3 first floor).

The staff were super friendly, all spoke great English (or Spanish), though were happy to pander to my phrase book French ;-) It's only a B&B, so no dinner (you don't need it, it's 2 minutes from dozens of restaurants), but I really enjoyed the breakfasts. You'll find cheaper breakfasts (they're €12), but the setting is magical - in the sun, looking at the vista of the city in front of you. A little oasis. The owner's young children served me one morning, under the watchful eye of their Mum - very sweet indeed :-) The same area is the bar in the evening, and its beautiful to have a nightcap under the city walls.

There's a pool - only tiny, I didn't bother with it - and a Spa which looked expensive and I wonder how many guests who have chosen this mid range hotel will want to spend the money.

Overall, don't expect 4 star luxury, but do expect a quiet, beautiful, well run little hotel with a fantastic view and a nice friendly vibe.

(My top tips for Carcassonne itself (1) Don't miss the tour of the Chateau itself, very worthwhile (2) La Cite is at its most charming in the evening - it can get VERY busy in the day time in high season, but once the day trippers are gone you can wander around more easily, including on the stunning outer walls [do it at midnight, it's like something out of Hamlet] (3) Walk down towards the Pont Vieux and take a picnic to the edge of the lovely River Aude)

Room Tip: The rooms directly facing La Cite are at the end of the building - ground floor ones have a little t...
